Astika samAjam , alwarpet is indeed a great sabha for the steadfast commitment to arts , though they have equal share of upanyasam along with core Carnatic concert. May be i am coming to this place after 4 years of so, the hall that once had 3 columns of seating is now kept flat with nice flooring . Also the shelter roof that had tin/asbestos roof has a nice granite even flooring structure . They retain the no airconditioner which is great , the sound set up has been made better - still hopefully they can make it bit more better for sure .

THey have this series as a line up of artists till Dec 08th and they call it as Thyagaraja Aradhana . So as such it is all flagship vaggeyakkara based compositions. KBMK has indeed come a long way in aesthetics , he had few years of rough patch say 7 or 8 years back but that is surely behind him. KBMK being a karaikkudi mani student possibly also engaged the kanjiraman Shree Sundar kumar to perform .Two other extremely accomplished artists alos joined ,one well recognized Ghatam Karthik and another considerably younger L Ramakrishnan who is one of the finest draw as a real present star violin accompaniment.

The team adjusted individually the sound with quite a lot of instructions but as i walked out with a very very limited crowd , there was this murmur that the sound setup could have been far better . The first two songs had a uneven sound setup and i felt that KBMK is singing behind percussion. The sowrashtram sree ganapathini is a great krithi , i felt he also sang the ne adamOdi gallate quite creatively but he wrapped two first numbers as standalone krithi. I am assuming he did it as the sound setup was not that satisfying. Any concert if two consecutive numbers are just stand alone krithis , bit felt at that time that there is more to come and yet not come feeling .Kutcheri did not kalai kattufy

KBMK showed his class in nayaki alapana . HE sings with a texture of excess brigas at times , kind of abhishek raghuramism is what he tries to bring , all said he did well . Krithi was well done, he could he gone bit more in swaras with great ideas but just stopped as though it was a doordarshan concert.

VIjayshri is a fast filler and that appeared bit more faster with the flying fingers . I felt at this point why they did not adjust the sound system better especially when both percussionist play in tandem . Lines of krithis were a bit of blur. What a wonderful devagandhari he sang , his paramaguru Semmangudi sings so beautifully and KBMK sang exceptionally well the krihti karunA samudhra. Certainly the best pick was his devagandhari

The main was a rare main ragam . I recollect for the first time I heard TNS singing hameerkalyani as a main. KBMK Did great justice and provided condensed but indeed a deep aesthetic alapana of hameerkalyani. Neraval was very nice with a nice original brigha based second half . Swaras were sung very well , he has power in his voice and the modulation changes in hameerkalyani did indeed come out very deep in aesthetics

Post tani ,the number sompaina was sung with lot of oomph. I Was surprised with him taking kamalAptakula as a last number . Atleast for 15 plus years i never knew thyagaraja composed a krithi in brindavana saranga / brindavani . My ears opened with one manakkal rangarajan mama singing kamalApta kula and then heard a DR BMK singing kamalApta , KBMK could have taken this krithi that bit more in the front is what i had felt.

L Ramakrishnan played as usual in an exceptionally Carnatic perfect fashion. He taking the ideas of nayaki and hameerkalyani and correctly proportioning and playing the salient half of what KBMK sang has to be specially mentioned . Percussion team of BS SUndarkumar indeed has a very fast fingers . I am not sure if there was a pure hall problem , but his strokes were kind of hit and HIT. hit as in having a variety of patterns and was also a HIT as in bit of excess strike .

Ghatam Karthik is effortless player of ghatam , he could have bit calibrated and showed restraint for the first half considering the hall acoustics . Their tani was very strokeful, konjam at times it was bit heavy on ears but they had lot of camaraderie . Personally I am assuming Sree sundar kumar the phenomenal kanjira man has to adopt a little less HIT approach to mrudu angam .Possibly he is slowly transitioning from kanjira to mrudangam artist and that sensitivity takes its own time . I think he has great patterns hope he becomes a well respected super star like Neyveli Venkatesh who also transitioned from Kanjira to Mrudangam.

The sound balance of say vocal getting bit drowned from quite a heavy share of "tandem" dual percussion did rob the concert , but certainly for few krithis say nayaki and hameerkalyani KBMK showed his intense Carnatic excellence.

Overall a very good concert for 2 exact hours.
