Vijay Siva is certainly a top 5 musician among males. He brings his intensity with a spread of compositions as his major strength. All times i always feel he can bit more cut loose in alapana, neraval and swaras and go little more dashing and this concert was no different , but the same crib i can always have with his Guru Mahavidwan Late DKJ .

i came late , i think i just heard a bit of bhairavi varnam . If it was indeed bhairavi , then i was inexcusably late. Dropping a brisk thyagaraja krithi as #2 down is a usual time tested and proven paddhati and he did very well neraval and swaras and also the bilahari inta kanna nanda memi came out well for the percussionist to also come into form.

Huseni is a beautiful ragam , in early days of your listening years you struggle to disambiguate at times with Ananda bhairavi or a reetigowlai . Vijay singing a clean huseni alapana and a lovely MD krithi sri kalahastheesa was musical aesthetics at its finest best. If there is a T , MD what else will likely follow . IT was shyama sastri Neelambari krithi brovaammA , konjam neelambari rasa could have been added bit more is what i thought.

Ramapriya came next as submain.My usual mind thinks it is not vachaspathi then i recollected bit later ramapriya . THe neraval was bit still in the same madhyamakalam i wish he had bit cut loose there. OK i do know this is a big sabha and RTP will be surely there. The main came in as mohanam , with two neravals over and with RTP being imminent , my mind was guessing nannu palimpa as most of the musicians have nannu pAlimpa as RST instead of R N S T. Mohanam nannu pAlimpA krithi and swaras came out well and the team gelled very well. The intermediate Cinna natana just before mohanam was a quick pass in between that did not register that well

RTP main was in Todi. Romba measured raga alapanai i wish he dwelled bit more in alapana . Taanam was non metered it was a clean taanam. Pallavi amaippu was very good he did sufficient justice to both neraval and ragamaliga swaras. He ended with shyama as a ragamaliga and without a pause he took a short viruththam in ragamaliga . I think without a pause from RTP to the next song was actually first done by GNB . For many years i thought sanjay did it and after few reviews some one pointed out GNB did it first . It is a brilliant strategy in two ways you can also reduce the quantum of RTP and also give the continued oomph. Ragamaliga viruththam had designer ragas like dhanyasi and jonpuri . Mahakavi bharathiyar anniversary came out well with aasai mugam marandhu pochu.

I was surprised with ma Ramanan in hindolam drop after viruththam , it is a brilliant krithi by sivan and he did very well. Tevaram came as a quick drop in folkish shenjurutti . The last Kalyani thirruppugazh was like a default thirruppugazh long list of words with few likely rasas to point out the ragam in a faint way.

RKSK the violinist played very well for most of the time , did AC affect his string tone a bit , may be may be not . His alapana in mohanam and ramapriya was distilled well and kept up with the muse of vijay . ManojSiva played very well along with the brilliant assist of Chandrasekara Sharma , nice rotation between them without causing any overload of song . THeir tani went well with the song , the quantum was just right not to eat either the RTP but still give good recuperating lung space for vocalist.

The two sishyas took turn to sing for some snippets , at some places they gelled well at few places i wished it was bit better . Many years back i heard one sishya by name N Harish of Vijay siva , looking forward to hear Vigneswaran and Swaminathan to hear them in a standalone concert.

Few words for Sabhas

It is evident that the years 2020 and 2021 were very bad years for Carnatic Music. My calculated guess is we lost lot of senior citizens who joined DKJ.The tickets are priced at 200,500 and 1000. I also attended another concert in vanimahal. With 80 percent hall empty , we see few rows at the end at 200 rs is near full and so much of rows are empty. Unlike Raga/Sanjay or Abhishek all the artists are going to struggle for audience . Few days back when i paid for Abhishek the alwarpet hall was significantly full 75 to 80 percent . Vanimahal cannot be this empty. ALso remember in a day or two Academy , Bharath kalachar, SKGS are opening so less rasikas will only come to each sabha . So let us encourage more rasikas to come to sabha. Families will not come to such prized tickets.

Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours and 30 mins
