Occasion : Pallai Darbar - Exclusive RTP concerts
After 2 days of 4 RTP concerts , it was a Monday , thought i could hear two back to back RTP , due to work could not hear the second K Gayathri RTP but only heard this first concert of this young and brilliant Swarathmika Srikanth. I have heard her only once before and certainly it was a great concert
01A. Ragam in Lathangi for 14 mins with 8 mins violin return
The experience of any ragam for any rasika is always a cultivated choice over years . Personally not a big fan of Lathangi as a ragam . Once a decade or 15 years back young violinist Aishwarya (disciple of TNK and SRJ) played a lovely main then . What ails to me is lathangi as a ragam , this ragam stays at the intersect of say the usually drowsy/bit more leisurely Kalyani and a briga / fast paced pantuvarali . I always feel Lathangi is not that shining prathi madhyama ragam for RTP . Ofcourse how can i say Kalyani is drowsy after hearing say kamalambam of MMI , needu charana pankajamula of SSI or vasudevayani of GNB.There is some thing that is so unique and keeps you in ecstasy with these renditions of the 3 Carnatic vocal trinities where atleast they serve as big outliers than many many krithis and many many other renditions. So as such Kalyani in Carnatic with few renditions are as splendid as the way say illayaraja has handled in his kalyani based creations. Pantuvarali is always fantastic, there is certainly enough inbuilt brigas and charge in that ragam almost sold out for any krithi.
i feel instead of lathangi why cant musicians just take say pantuvarali or kalyani.WIth that mindset of pantuvarali and Kalyani , one has to give it to Swarathmika she surely did very well by singing a briga filled rendition of latangi. HEr voice quality and vocal power intersects well and it was a clean latangi step by step build up with plenty of brigas
01B. Taanam in Lathangi for 14 mins
Taanam was non metered and she did well. Her voice did not cave and did not fluctuate . I would always be happy if taanam has a second half of mrudangam where the patterns should be long enough. At the end of Ragam and taanam i was thinking more like she is a junior upcoming artist when compared to last 4 RTP concerts and she possibly needs bit more time to give a more expanded RTP. But i was wrong as she really surprised me with Pallavi nerval and more importantly swaras

01C. Pallavi for 22 mins and swara ragamaligas for 26 mins
Pallavi line was Navagraha rAsyadi sukshma chakra swara mandalam
pancha bhoota Vishwa shanthi mangalam
I wish i had reviewed few weeks back to recollect better. I think she explained some thing on saptamukhi and i think she chose 5 swaras to signify pancha. My notes says this is kanda jathi kanda triputa Pallavi
The Pallavi lines were nicely constructed . There was even spacing with no chances of excess somersault laya balti and that is always a good thing . Her Pallavi rendition was well done and keeping with her name swara ,her swara ragamaliga was extremely impressive . Post Lathangi swaras, i certainly did not expect roopavathi(definitely this was a big surprise) and nasikabhooshani. Bit later shanmughapriya and dhavalangam (another big surprise). There was another 05th raga that i could not identify(did i hear shades of vanaspathi/ganamoothi but i do know it is some other ragam which i did not identify) . All said Swarathmika indeed conveyed intricate musical nuances with grace. She finally wrapped up well with latangi. Certainly in Pallavi and swaras she was way too senior and nothing appeared junior there
01D. tani for 14 mins
Chinmayee played exceptionally well . She tows so well with the vocalist and she just reminded me like say a Delhi Sundarrajan playing for a TVS/TNS.Her father Srinivasaraghavan from Lalgudi school has certainly taught her well on the lalgudi laya poruttam . Mrudangist played very well for the course of RTP , not recollecting that well on how his tani was , bit felt the tone then could have been better.
Special Kudos to Carnatica and sashikiran and his extended team.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The joy of hearing the so called unadulterated , no frills RTP exclusive concert without any collaboration/fusion where musical time is not censored is welcome . Also Sashikiran genuinely appreciates every artist and he also does not mind extending time (for eg KBMK had 2 hours time)and gives a crisp welcome and exit speech. He builts brick by brick the listening base. Some time on Monday during this concert, he was also taking time to appreciate vidwan Tiruvarur Vaidyanathan who has got this year SKGS - Sangeetha choodamani award, this is good and genuinely a great gesture to celebrate artists both on and off the stage.
Overall an excellent concert for 75 mins Pallavi without tani
