I am a big admirer of Sahana ragam (like many after reading these threads). I would like to know more about its structure, its origins, good time to sing, how to learn, composers who composed in this raga and the various krithis in this raga that is available. I should say that i was drawn by Sahana after hearing to Shri. MDR in Giripai.
I have a request to all rasikas if anybody can post any of the sahana krithis in audio/video format that you might have?

Coolkarni Sir,
Thank you. I appreciate your gesture. I should mention here that your contribution to this group and others are extremely valuable. After seeing this group (including you and other mahanubhavas), i am encouraged and more enthusiastic about upholding and learning more about our music tradition.
We waiting for sahana to pour on us.
Thanks.

Kiran Sir,
Thanks for starting the downpour. I have definitely heard all the krithis in your upload but listening to sahana again and by different artists make me just feel so like a first timer and elated as always.
Looking for the rest as well.
I would also request if you/ any one can shed some information on the important, common, uncommon prayogams of swarams in sahana.
Has Dikshitar composed in Sahana? I am pretty confident that Shyama sastry hasn't but would like to check with you all. How about Purandara Dasa, Papanasam Sivan, Ambujam Krishna, Annamacharya, Swathi Tirunal, Kshetagna etc.
Thanks.

Certainly yes. Dikshitar has composed one of the Navavarana Kritis in Sahana. Saint Thyagaraja has included a song in Sahana in his Kovur Pancharatna kritis. Under Sangeetha Label, Suguna Purushothaman and her disciples had rendered "Rare Kritis of Shyma Sastri". I am not too sure whether this contains a composition in Sahana.
First we need to arrive at a list of krithis composer-wise. That will give us a better picture. As far as rare prayogams are concerned, ideally you must listen to RTPs in Sahana by different artists so that you could understand the difference in its entirety.

Dikshitar has got a couple in Sahana. One of them is in the list that I have sent you. There is one more I think in Sahana. I think Thyagaraja has got lot more than anyone. We dont have any raagas list of Annamaacharya. people sing his kirtans in raagas of their choice. I have learnt upto 30 Syamasatri krithis of which I dont remember anything in Sahana. One song in the group that I have sent you is by Purandara dasa sung by Smt M.S.Sheela. I have a very few tamil songs so no clue about tamil compositions in Sahana.
Praogams like Pa Ma Ga Ma Ri, Da Pa Ma Da Ni Da pa ma Ga mA Ri, Ri Pa Ma Ga Ma Rii Ga Ri, are the kind that establish the raaga immediately. More to follow

Thanks Kaumaaram, Kiran and coolkarni sir. How did i forget the navavarana krithi? I have heard that from Shri DKJ many many times...May be it was the late night effect ...
I will work today and tomorrow to list as many krithis in Sahana by composers..I think many artists render the same krithis (although IMHO, everybody shows the swaroopa differently). We should see the whole gamut and see if they have been rendered by some great soul.
In the meantime, keep the sahana (meaning 'Patience' , i read this somehwere) flowing...
Coolkarni sir,
I believe i am going to hear "Manamu" for the first time. I just realized that 'Chittam irangada' is a Sivan krithi. Beautiful one. Thanks. I always feel that sahana sung in vilamba kalam particularly is very soothing to the mind. It draws me like a bee to the flower.
Is there any other raga that is very close to sahana in structure?

I am guessing that the sahana downpour has stopped for something more to come...
Anyway, I found Jayajaya raghu rama Chapu Swati Tirunal in www.swathitirunal.org for those interested. It was nice.
Kaumaaram sir, Not to digress, Can you give more details on the rare krithis of shyama sastri..He is my favourite composer...I will start a thread on him later..
Kiran sir, Very interesting. I never knew that sahana and dwijavanthi are related. Infact, i have to hear to dwijavanthi again to notice that.

Sahana - PriyanKaumaaram sir, I am looking for ways to buy it...Where and label # etc.?
It was on Sangeetha label. The management has changed hands that such good numbers are not all produced these days! I am trying to lay my hands on it and no sooner than obtaining it, shall give it to you. Let me tell you seriously and without kidding you, that the renditions had come out excellently well, recording being nice and the voices of all the artists participating in the venture neatly synchronising. Possibly, Coolkarni might be having it!

which is the artist you are referring to please?
sahanapriyan-do not despair.
I have taken down the list .and am working on it .if i cannot locate it myself, i have a huge back office which will continue to work on it.we gurantee that we will get you tired of this raga.
speaking of sahana, one of the most enduring images etched in my mind is that of a very young ravikiran , bent over his gottuvadyam (as it was then called) and playing some great sahanas , in the early 80s.
cannot describe that experience in words.Pure bliss.
I have been waiting for someone to post GNB's famous sahana RTP -now where has badri gone?-
If Nothing happens for another day , I will post it myself in parts.a great sahana.
any one of you who downloaded the concert of BV Raman Laxman at this forum a couple of months ago, will remember a delightful giripai by them.Kindly upload it please>
Since I can now scan -my catlogs-only artist by artist , picking out the great sahana tracks will be slow..

Coolkarni sir,
Thanks sir. Does a bee get tired of flower(with full of eternal nectar in this case) once it knows the taste of the nectar? Never. It will go elsewhere but surely come back. That is how i will be to sahana.
Badri Sir,
You have answered the calls for Krithis by one and all. I have seen that in many forums. I am about to listen BVR-BVL Giripai. Thanks.
Keep the downpour coming...After the downpour or along with it, we should take song by song and discuss that as well to see why is sahana so good and why the composers choose sahana for a particular krithi? Atleast for layman like me...
'Loka samastha sukhino bhavanthu'
Que: How is sahana related to hindustani ragam named 'shahana'? Any idea..

Sahanaa Priyan!
Sahana is a Karuna Rasapradaana raagam which makes it suitable for songs which have a meaning that suggests Saranaagathi. For example take up Vandanamu Raghu nandanaa by Sri Thyagaraaja. If you see the saahithyam, in one of the charanaas it says Odanu( I wont loose) Bhakthi Veedanu( I wont leave your worship) Parula vedanu( I will never pray anyone one else) Nee Vaadanu( Iam yours) What else is there to be written about Saranagathi than this Charanam. Such is the power of words. Sahana is indeed a great raagam carnatic music is proud of. I have a BMK`s rendtion of navavarna krithi in Sahana on a tape. Will try to Put it on my comp and send it to you, before the week end.

Kiran Sir,
Thinking about it more.. You are indeed right..That is the feeling i get when i hear to sahana.
As i wrote before, after we get to hear the audio portion or along with it, we should discuss the krithis in detail as possible and see what kind of feelings(bhava) that the composer had in his heart at that point. I would appreciate if some can tell us the context of these krithis if possible. I have heard that Giripai was the krithi that Saint Thyagaraja composed when Rama came in his dream and told that he will attain HIS feet 11 days(not sure) from that day.. Indeed a great soul to have this grand vision..

All,
It looks like the downpour has come to an end...
Coolkarni sir, Do you think you have any other krithis in the list sung by any artist?
I think we can discuss the meaning of krithis in our list that we have. I will suggest to start with 'Giripai'? I am not that familiar with Telugu but can somebody get us the lyric and notation? When was it composed? What is special about the prayogams(if any)? Any interesting anecdotes?
I hope we can keep the momentum going...Thanks.
