Learn A to Z of Carnatic Music through DVDs
BVT FEATURES
FOR many years now, there has been concern over deteriorating quality of music and the increasing commercialization of classical music and dances. One such initiative is the efforts of Vidushi Nagamani Srinath, who after years of research, has produced DVDs which bring in the essence of the true Gurukula type of learning. Be it a beginner or a seasoned practioner of music, Nagamani's Gurukula imparts those lessons commencing from Sarale Varase to Ragam-Thanam-Pallavi with the stress not just on theory but with great emphasis on the practicality of these aspects. There are shlokas on all deities in different ragas and Puranadaradasa's life story is enacted as a play too. With four volumes of DVDs already released during the 38th Music Conference at Bangalore Gayana Samaja, as many as 10 audio CDs containing these music lessons will see the light of the day at a congregation of young musicians to be held by the City-based Ganakala Parishat, shortly. Presently serving as the professor and head of the department of music at the Maharani's College, Nagamani says, "I have covered a vast range of lessons, putting across a personal touch to accommodate the Guru-Shishya parampare. Otherwise, the present generation will hardly know how we all learnt music." Nagamani has been taught by the legends of Carnatic music like Ramnad Krishnan and M L Vasantha Kumari. Nagamani has overseen the concept, teaching, orchestration,
choreography and direction.
