Sanjay has sung an RTP in Hindolam on several occasions......though in recent times, Sahana has taken pride of place in his concerts....Ofcourse, his Neerajakshi in a commercial album is sung in a beautiful, subtle manner...I consider Sanjay's specialties to be Sahana, Hindolam, Mohanam and ofcourse Brindavana Saranga...Vijay, that review you wrote of Sanjay in Music Academy still appeals, I enjoyed it as much as I did the concert itself....

IMHO, if people sing/play with out mimicking bhUp or mAlkauns, their mOhanam and hindOLam will also be heavy. You can probably give the bhup-malkauns flavours post pallavi. I think Sanjay does a good job by sticking well to the basics and improvising in those lines. A couple of years ago (Dec 2001 or 2002), he sang a superlative hindOLam followed by karuNAlayanidiyE at nArada gAna sabha. I have not heard him sing mOhanam yet.vijay wrote:Sanjay does not shy away from supposedly "light" ragas like Mohanam and Hindolam...and his rendition proved once again that such ragas are indeed worthy of inclusion as main/sub-main pieces. I'd certainly like to hear an RTP in Hindolam one day!

IMO, ragas such as mOhana and hindOLa can be termed light in only the sense that even musically lightvijay wrote:Sanjay does not shy away from supposedly "light" ragas like Mohanam and Hindolam...and his rendition proved once again that such ragas are indeed worthy of inclusion as main/sub-main pieces. He sang Mohana Rama recently at a concert at Madipakkam and it was by no means light. The past three or four concert reviews have featured either Narayani or Narayanagowla. It was nice to hear Narayani in a concert after a long time. But my wish for a Narayanagowla hasn't been fulfilled yet. I've heard that both Sanjay and TMK sing Sri Ramam very well.

In recent months Sanjay has singled out Mohanam for major treatment in two concerts that this writer attended - Music Academy in December '06, and in Bangalore a month earlier at the Ganjam Flights of Fantasy series in Chowdiah Hall. On both occasions he chose the same krithi, "Kapali". The nadaswaram bani, which is his latest penchant, was greatly in evidence during the alapana in both venues, drawing repeated applause when he held a note for well over 30 seconds on more than one occasion.
