Sad news indeed. I heard recently that he was ailing from cancer and had been admitted to hospital in Adyar.

May his soul rest in peace.

yes. I had also heard that he was suffering from Cancer. In fact, the Alathoor Venkataraman concert which i had attended, Sri Venkataraman was replacing the ailing Thiruvengadu Sri Jayaraman.

May his soul rest in pace

condolences to the family members. I had many occasions to be near him both on stage and off stage. Really a loss to the music world. A great personality and great human being with lots of values.

May his soul rest in peace

It was just two months ago that I heard this avuncular gentleman merrily holding forth on the fine art of making rasam alongwith some fascinating insights on MMI's legacy...I cannot easily reconcile such infectious enthusiasm with silence but time gets the better of the best of us...

My condolences to his family and well wishers.

This is very unfortunate... I had the opportunity to meet him recently, and I thought he was relatively healthy. This is a great loss, as he was a very good teacher. May his soul rest in peace.

I am indeed very sad to hear the passing away of this musical giant. I have heard him in his heydays when he was among the best. May he rest in peace. Condolence to the family.

May his soul rest in peace - of which I am sure of as I listened to an AIR concert of his a few days ago and the serene rendering brought peace to me at that time!

This is sad news indeed. I had the good fortune to accompany him at a house concert a few years ago - a very kindly gentleman full of encouragement.

Condolences to the family. I had the privilege of listening to a stunning Abhogi and a sublime Y'Kamboji in MFAC a few years back. May his soul rest in peace.

Are there any commercial recordings of this great artiste available?

I am at the extreme depth of sorrow on hearing this news. It was in Jan 06 that I met with him at the Sashtiapthapoorthi of Sri Easwaran. He was in a reasonably good health and he looked quite cheerful. Sri Easwaran always enjoyed playing for him, not only for his vidwat but more so in the way Sri Jayaraman had been behind Sri Easwaran in his career. It is a huge loss to the music world, a gap which will be difficult to fill.

Thiruvengadu Jayaraman was known for his high principles and he is also well knowm as a ,vanangamudi, to any sabha secretary and that is why he was a well respected vidwan with no regrets.

mAma's pATTu is as beautiful as the tiruvEnkADu svEtAraNyESvarar kOvil. Coolji please post some more.

Meena - I do not have text. But I listened to it and jotted down the words.

ksrimech:
I usually shy away from this type of 'Sen tamizh' verses (or 'koDun tamizh' as Kalki would say!). I confine myself to the more colloquial compositions. - let me try the first part as see how I mess up!

kAnaDA?
vEda vEdanta tattuva sikharamElEri ninRu viTTOm
We have climbed (Eri ninRu viTTOm) atop (mEl) the peak/height of (Sikharam) the essence of all the vEda and vEdAntas = We have experienced the essence of the vEda and vEdanta….

viLayamaniyamamEnum aStAngAnga yOgamadil veRRiyum peRRu viTTOm?
Not sure about the first word here….
We have conquered (veRRiyum peRRu viTTom) aSTAnga yoga.

Adaravil aruvattu nAngu kalaigaLin Adi ananthamum kanDu viTTOm?
Under our/your patronage (Adaravil), we have seen/experienced (kaNDu viTTOm) the 64 (aruvattu nAngu) different art forms (kalaigaL) in their entirety (from the beginning – Adi, to the end – antamum)...

arivariyA enRutIr siruvar viLaiyATTEnavum aLavinRi ADiviTTOm?
We have played (ADiviTTOm) the games (viLaiyATTu) of little children (Siruvar) without realizing/understanding it (arivariyA).
enRutir is not what I hear....

Thank you Shankarji. I cannot figure out what that word "enRutIr" is actually. Finding it difficult to identify it.

Isn't the first rAga kAnaDA?
