Ravi2006: are you sure this is Smt. MSS? Sounds a lot like NCV to me. (I know what CML will say to that!:P)

I'm pretty sure. Perhaps it an artefact of the sound quality. Also, she must be quite young at the time of this recording - before she started modulating her voice as she did later.

I've just noticed, the same site also has a section with NCV audioclips.

I'm glad your question prompted me to seek this out - I'm currently discovering NCV's voice for the first time.

I am glad I introduced you to the real 'vasantakOkilam' - the melodious song bird of spring! It was a title/name confered on the singer who was born Kamakshi in pAlghAT/pAlakkADu.
