12. mangalam.

I went for the team as I always find each of them always excelling. But the dampening factor of exellence is the floating crowd , Arya gowda road traffic and relatively not the best of sound setting.Almost all the krithis were very good. I did enjoy the sudda sAveri the most particularly with the cittaswaram of vijayashiva with an excellent manOdharma laya display by the legndary raghu.

Certainly the bhairavi was not as excellent as what I have already heard from vijayashiva. Liked the viruttam and the racy followup with a tara sthayi crescendo eppovaruvAro in jOnpuri . Immediately his followup with slOkham and purandaradAsar krithi in a fairly sedate dEsh reinforced again the sequencing and presentation skills of vijayashiva which I always admire.

Vittal was almost perfect everywhere with only one slip in suddasAveri and hameerkalyAni. But the day more belonged to grandfather and grandson layAm exposition.

Just a good /lousy logic(take it whatever way you want) to explain how I feel about palakkAd raghu. Yesterday when I tried to hammer few nails with the hammer in my home , I struggled .My house carpenter who happened to visit my home, he did take the same hammmer and nail. He just hit every nail right on the head once , the sound appeared perfect , you just dont have to see the wall (it was obviously perfect). I get the same experience whenever I hear this legendary mridangist palakkAd raghu.Every tala cycle has a very lingering mridangam nAdham which most other mridangist cannot reproduce though there are few who come close. Perhaps all the next generation of mridangam artist should get trained on that nAdham and tuning aspect from this legend.

The tani was quite long , abhisEk impressed as much as his grandfather. I was surprised with 2 immediate krithi renditions even after 22 minutes of tani , instead of vijayashiva giving little rest for the veteran with a slOkham/viruttam . But however rAghu appeared more charged than what I imagined where there were lovely strokes especially in hindOlam.

I like Vijay Siva's Bhairavis a lot. Haven't heard Upacharamu from him, but Lalithe, Raksha Bettare, Chintaya Ma, Koluvaiunnade are all sung majestically by him. I would love to hear his Sri Kamalambaya Param or Aryam Abhayambam. For some reason, I did not enjoy his rendition of Balagopala as much as I enjoyed KVN Sir's version.

This must have been a really good one to attend. Vijay Siva and Raghu Sir both present solid stuff with complete involvement. And the nadam of Raghu Sir's beats on a 2 kattai mridangam is heavenly.
