R.Suryaprakash
Madurai S Balasubramanian
Mannarkoil J Balaji

What an excellent concert suryaprakash rendered for Lakshmi Kalaivani at Valasaravakkam, Chennai.
The list includes :

Thenpazhani Velavane -Virutham
Subrahmanyena-Sudha Dhanyasi-Adi
Rama Ika Nannu -Sahana-Rupakam
Manvyala-Nalinakanthi-Adi
Sri satya narayanam-Subhapantuvarali-Rupakam
Sevikka Vendumayya-Andolika-Adi
Enduku Beddala-Shankarabharanam-Adi
Madurai Arasalum-Ragamalika
Orunal Oru Pozhudaginum
Nanmayum selvamum-Suruti and tilang
Rama Rama -Tilang
Vazhiya Senthamizh

The concert was a blazing one with Suryaprakash in full flow with both voice as well as raga bhava. He is quite adept in Virutam Singing and he started off with a virutam in Sudha Dhanyasi followed it up with an excellent and bright rendition of Subrahmanyena. A brief alapana in sahana brought out the beauty and intricacy of the raga and ensuing kriti Rama Ika Nannu brova rada daya leda was neatly rendered with bhava. Manavyala kimchara in Nalinakanti followed suit with fast pace and Sury's voice was felicituous enough to provide him scope for fast paced swara rendition also. Subhapantuvarali came as a surprise sub-main item. Sri Satyanarayanam had Ragam and Niraval. Andolika, Sevikka Vendumayya was rendered as a filler with swaras for 3/4 place. Shankarabharanam came next with beautiful phrases bordering on srutibhedam also at a few places. He sang Enduku Beddala and sang swaram at Veda Shastra Tatvartamu. Sang an excellent korvai also which goes like this in sollukattu :

1st Time
Takita thakadimi Thadiginathom Tha , , , Dhi , , , gi , , , na , , , thom , , ,

tha , di , ginathom tha , di , ginathom tha , di , ginathom,
tha , di , ginathom tha , di , ginathom tha , di , ginathom,

Then the usual tukkada pieces followed suit with Madurai Arasalum-Ragamalika, virutam and Ramarama in Tilang then Vazhiya Senthamizh.

Madurai Balasubramaniam followed the main artiste with natural flair and aplomb.

I played Tani Avartanam in Adi Rendu Kalai for Enduku Beddala. Played tisra Nadai and final korvai was for a total of 81 beats (3 * 27 beat per Korvai). Due to this we can take the Main Mohara and Korvai from Samam and then after three rounds it will come to Idam or Starting point of the song or niraval line.

Though the crowd was meagre each one of them enjoyed the concert and there was an overwhelming applause for the kritis and especially Enduku Beddala Ragam and Swaram.

On the whole an enjoyable Evening.

balaji,
IIRC, Orunal Oru Pozhudaginum is dandapAni desigar composition, sung in mishra kamAs??. Appreciate your time spent on putting the solkattu .It looks to me you are a mridangam artist in a live sabha and a kunnakOl and mridangam artist in rasikas.org

Rajesh it was fm Nandanar film as announced by Surya himself. It must be MMD only .... tks for the compliments. Gods grace i shall continue my good work. Moreover my guru's both Tanjore ramadoss and MN Kandaswamy will never allow me to play unless i had them clearly first through Konnakkol. Hence i am adept at it too.
Tks

Very nice and humble of you to put up the Korvai here. :-)

You have mentioned main mohra. Is there a way to know when the mridangist plays the final main mohra before taking up the korvai? Could you delve into this matter also in the "Thani Avarathanam " thread.

Thx!

Mohan really gud. Thanks for enhancing the healthiness of this forum by making the korvai in swaras also.

Pallavi.pr i think i hv explained in detail about the mohara and korvai in structuring a korvai. It would be better if you listen to 100s of tani avartanams to get the feel of the exact start point of the mohara etc. until then any amount of writing will be of no use. It is like writing about sugar without tasting it .....

For my part i shall try to upload moharas and korvais .. no problem at all

mridangam,
Thank you for your detailed posts. Unlike us, ring side listeners, you add a new perspective by being a participant on stage!
Wish I had heard Suryaprakash's sahAnA (with his voice of emotive quality, he would have sung rAmA, ika nannu very appealingly). Enduku peddala valE is another one I would have relished. The mere forty five minutes of his singing in the TiruvaiyAru in Bangalore Festival in March orchestrated by Carnatica is still fresh in my memory...
