Another brilliant concert by Saketh in yet another Asthika samajam (last time was in Thiruvanmiyur Asthika samajam, last month beginning), almost with the same team (except the violinist, then it was Shri Nagai Shriram).
Saketh started unusually with a very high pitched and sonorant voice for his varnam, maybe to clear his throat. The Arabhi outline built up expectation of either a Saadhinchaney or Saalagalla as the second piece, which would have raised the tempo, instead was followed by a very pedestrian rendition of Naadhasudharasam bilanu, where both the main artiste and the violinist in particular made glaring slip-ups during the kuraippu. A good alaapana of Pantuvarali followed by grand Raghuvara, was quite apt considering the venue and the context.
The concert really opened up with the soulful Mukhaari Raaga vistaaram, where Saketh was in his elements, and the Bhaavam was well captured by this upcoming vidwan in all its grandeur. A brisk NenenDuveDaguDura, which was garnished very well by Shir Balaji's fantastic speedier nadais, was like a nice coffee break. The main was Keeravani with Kaligiyunte. What a brilliant performance! Saketh's vidwath was demonstrated here in every aspect, Aalapanai, rendition, neraval and swaram. An explosive Thani by Balaji and KVG rounded up a real class act by the team. Mysore Shrikath's accompaniment also needs special mention here.
Saketh then gave a Shlokam (Jaanaathi..) in three raagams, again brilliantly followed by Shrikanth, followed by a very touching Pibare raama rasam. A brief outline of Thelang with Rama rama rama yeniro by Purandaradasar was ridden with Bhakti for this brother of Smt Vishakha Hari, going by their family tradition. Saketh ended the concert with a beautiful Desh thillana, where the understanding between him and the accompanists was very evident.
Shri. Tvm Balaji stood out among the accompanists, and with his brilliant changes in nadais and kaalapramaanams enriched the concert very well and raised the tempo adequately, to make it very lively. Shri KVG was unusually quite subdued (maybe the start was not good with a mike problem for him - organisers to note) and Shri Mysore Shrikanth being off-colour in the first half of the concert. However Shrikanth compensated in the second half.
Overall a very good concert yet again highlighting the tremendous potential Shri Saketh and this young team of artistes have in scaling many peaks in future...
The presence of a host of other young performers in the audience (like Abhishek Raghuram, Charumathi (violinist), K. Gayathri etc.) showed the popularity of this young team amongst the youngsters and the camaraderie these artists enjoy amongst themselves - a very healthy trend!
