Last time, somebody felt that ‘Luz’ should be pronounced as ‘leuz’ and not ‘loose’ and quoted the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in support, though she conceded that the pronunciation if French rather than Spanish or Portuguese. The French, in my opinion, are the last race we should ask for assistance in pronunciation. Wherever on earth did they get an ‘e’ in ‘Luz’? This is really what happens when a race randomly decides to throw vowels into words. Take for example words like Ouabache, Ouattaoua or Ougadougou. What is it with the French, this business of stringing vowels together? I decided to ask a French acquaintance of mine if the French language has many words where several vowels run together.

He replied, “Oui, M’sieur, oui.â€

The next item was Sri Madhurapuri in Sahana.
Are you sure it was not bilahari? If it was shahAnA any idea whose composition it is?

Pourquoi êtes-vous fou au sujet du mot «Luz» ?

The kriti was Sri Madhurapura, not Sri Madhurapuri. Yes, it was Sahana and not Bilahari.

I went back to the Lakshman Ragade Definitive Guide to Kritis and unfortunately my edition doesn't contain the name of the author for this kriti.

(My wife often has reason to correct my pronunciations of local place names, but Luz, rhyming with Buzz, is one that seems to give even us foreigners little trouble. Moose, or even mice, just confuse the issue ---- but I often see a man with a horse giving rides near the park ;) )

I found out that the shahAnA song was composed by Namakkal Narasimha Iyengar and the ciTTasvara is by Karaikkudi Sambashiva Iyer.
