Up to the 1st caraNam - the pallavi and anupallavI...
Here goes:
edukku = why
ittanai = this much
mODi tAn= deceit/unfriendliness
umakku = for you (respectful for of address)
endan mEl = on (mEl) me (endan)
ayyA = my Lord
The poet wonders why the Lord is being unfriendly and refusing to talk to/ shower his grace on/grant the wishes of his ardent devotee.

pAdi = half
pirai = moon
shaDaiyil = (in) your matted locks
dharitta = (one who) bears
paramanE = Oh Lord of Lords
tillaip-pati= the town of cidambaram (tillai)
naTarAjanE = Oh naTarAjA...

In the AP, the composer clarifies the object of his love: he is none other than that Lord of Lords, the king among Dancers, the one who presides/resides in cidambaram, and wears the half moon on his matted locks....(a la AhAryam candra tArAdi....)

Did I also tell the truth (uNmai) that you begged (irandu) food in a skull (talai ODu) and ate it?

That you stood (ninRadu) ingratiatingly (pal= tooth; kATTi=showing) before the folks of the tricity (muppuram)---I don't know what this refers to. Shiva burnt the 3 cities but did he also ingratiate himself? (It could be a reference to his mendicant-look when he enticed the dhArukA vanam wives of the sages????)

[padayum] eccil uNDadaiyum shonnEnO [..]
Did I also say that you ate defiled (=eccil) (that which was left over?) food? (padayum =??)

There is a difference here between the first 2 lines and the last 2 lines. The first 2 refer to third person expression (sonnAnO---did he say so?) while the last two lines indicate first person expression (sonnEnO--did I say so?)

Still a convoluted construction. I attempted to the best of my ability.

All of these are sonnEnO - (Kum) Kamala Lakshman has danced SUPERBLY to this song at incredible speeds in a very old movie...the composer seems to be asking Siva why are are you disregarding me/ignoring me? Have I told the world some home truths about you? Have I let your secrets out? No! I haven't! So, why are you torturing me?

In the first reference about ATTakAl, it could refer to the fact that in a competition with Sakti/pAravti, to defeat her (because she was his equal in every way), Siva pulled a 'dirty' trick, and raised his foot above his head, and since in all modesty she could not do so, he was declared the winner....Possibly Marimutha Pillai is wondering if Siva is angry with him, because Siva thinks that this not so commendable fact has been bandied about by the composer...

He then goes on to say, did I ever denigrate you or your mount as a useless cow/bull?

Have I ever told the world about the uncouth incident where you ate out of the skull?

Did I publicise the incident where you ingratiated yourself before burning the three worlds?

Did I tell the world about the fact that your ate leftovers from other people's plates?

The poet seems to be saying, 'you have so many dark and unsavory secrets and incidents in your life that I am privy to, and since I have kept your confidence, the least you could do is grant me your blessings - instead, you chose to ignore me'!

There is no soothsayer or vehicle here. ArUDam is also ERudal (mounting). garuDArUDan is vishNu. I don't think it is either of these. We come to the Ar, yAr question again, here!
Ar (yAr+iDAm+Agilum)=have I ever, to anyone said that your
cattle wealth consists of a single bull? :)

The whole song needs to be revised according to the original text. Several letter transpositions threw so many curve balls which led to wild speculations and missed clues.
If Lakshman has the Thamizh text page, it is worth scanning it and posting it here or sending to one of us (Thamizh folks) for proper transcription.

I found the song in a different book. In this the stanzas are differently arranged and some of the wording is different.

Kamala dances to all of the caraNas - I think Sulamangalam Rajalakshmi sings it - and it is in the movie Sarangadhara....

The wordings are almost correct what Lakshman has given except in two three places. I have given below the song taken from a book published in 1928 and edited by Prof Shambamurthy. In this also in C1, the word 'attukkaal' is printed and not 'aatukkaal'. I feel the former is a typo and the latter is more appropriate, meaning the leg that dances.

Did I refer to the fact that your suffered lashes from a cane like a common laborer (for sleeping on the job - this refers to a tiruviLaiyADAl: When the dam in the city of madurai broke, the king ordered that one individual from each household had to volunteer to mend the breach - there was an old lady, a devotee of Lord sundarESwara, who was too infirm herself, and had no children or grandchildren to depute in her stead - to help her, the Lord appears as an able-bodied laborer, and offers to go in her stead, in return for a handful of puTTu - a staple food of the poor made from jaggery and I think maize flour - He goes to work, and carries a few bags of sand, and then falls asleep under a tree - the king who is supervising the construction is infuriated at this dereliction of duty, and wakes him up with a lash from his cane - when the Lord wakes up, the sting of the lash is felt on the backs of every living being - when the king feels the sting and the weal, he realizes who the 'laborer' actually was)... Did I refer to the fact that the 'once rich' (now poor) are the ones that seem to bow to you?
Did I scorn you for the fact that you wear animal skins because you can't afford even old clothes (from Goodwill stores)? Did I draw attention to the fact that you had to come as an old mendicant to kill a small child - (this refers to the malignant dwarf that was invoked by the heretic rishis in dArukA vana to fight Siva - they first invoke a tiger - whose skin became Siva's garment, and then a fearsome snake that Siva subdues and places around his neck, and finally the dwarf whose back Siva breaks with his right toe)...

The dwarf (demon) that was sent to attack Shiva by the dAruka vanam rishis was "muyalagan" who was trampled by the Lord under his right foot (which can be seen in the statue/picture of dancing naTarAjA).

That reference can be seen in the song "kAlait tUkki ninRADum deyvamE.." (yadukula kAmbhOdi) wherein the last two lines are "mundum valiyuDaiya muyalagan unnait tUkka"

The "echil" refers to Kannappa Naayanaar's story where he, in his innocent devotion tasted the cooked meat and offered the tenderest parts to Shiva.

The carrying of the pot of "kaL" happens in the story of Somaasi Maara Naayanaar. Shiva and his hordes appear in the form of a group of "Pulayars" and visit the Naayanaar's holy sacrifice(yagna) and he, in his great devotion is able to recognise Him.

Thanks a lot, Ravi and Arasi.

The story as I can recall is : Brahma who had 5 heads , thought himself equal to Shiva, so to quell his pride, Shiva plucked off one head. The skull stuck to him and became his begging bowl till Devi as Annapurna gave him food and he got rid of it. The head/skull in Shiva's hand signifies our loss of ego in surrendering to him.

with the story of Annapurna. ..

bhikSATana is a different story connected with dArukA vana - In this episode also Siva carries kapAla in his hand - http://www.shaivam.org/siddhanta/mabhik.html

The story mentioned by Rajani pertains to the brahmahatti dOSha with which Siva suffers after plucking the head of brahmA.

Is the singer sUlamangaLam Smt. Rajalakshmi?
This is one of the best examples of why the combination of vazhuvUrAr's choreography and Kum. Kamala's dance was an electrifying one - the likes of which have not been seen since.

'pallai kATTi' is the reference to the fact that Siva burned the three aereal cities with a mere smile - since this composition is fashioned as a nindA stiti, Sri muttutANDavar has taken the liberty of using 'pallai kATTi' to indicate the smile (iLittal, instead of nagaittal).

Yes, i read that he burnt the three cities with a mere smile- here sarcastically referred to as pallai katradu

But i was wondering why your translation called it an "ingratiating act" of pallu kattufying. I thought ingratiate meant flattering someone. So wondering.

Also, i heard a dance version audio somewhere with many repititions of otrai mattukaran...line. Is that connected to a story from thiruvilayadal or is it a straightforward snide
remark about "you only possess one bull"

A question with a bit of cross reference
In teruvil varano, the uruviliodu tiruppurathayum udaneri seida natanarasan
The uruvili can't mean oruvizhi (one-eye) right? Cos Shiva didn't burn the tirupuram with his eye but with a smile and later with a bow and arrow. So...did i miss something there?

pallai kATTi' is the reference to the fact that Siva burned the three aereal cities with a mere smile - since this composition is fashioned as a nindA stiti, Sri muttutANDavar has taken the liberty of using 'pallai kATTi' to indicate the smile (iLittal, instead of nagaittal).
Recorded by MuttuswAmi dIksitar in equally brief expressions -

dara-hAsa-tripurAdi-haraNaM - one who destroyed the three cities (even) with a smile. [from srImAtRbhUtaM, kannaDa]

hasana-jita-tripuraM - ditto [from kusumAkara-shObhita-srIpuragEhaM, kusumAkara]

Must have been a real 'killer smile' !

Btw, does anyone have the full audio from sarangadhara or any other audio which has all 3 charanams. This composition is so ignored by singers :(

I revisited this page because I had a niggling feeling that the reference to the child wasn't about the apasmAra/ muyalakan, and have included a few other different interpretations. Given my shaky background in Tamil, I am open to corrections -

KaTTap- pazhanthuNiyindri tOluduttadaip- pazhippu connEnO? – Did I fault you for wearing skins, not having even an old scrap of cloth to wear? [3]

siRu-kuzhandaiyaik- kolla ANDiyAi vanda tiruTTu ellAm VeLi viTTu connEnO? - Did I make public your misdemeanor, where you came as a mendicant and had a child killed? [4]

1. Refers to the ‘piTTukku maN sumanda tiruviLaiyADal’ commemorated annaly in the piTTu tiruvizhA celebrated every year, as the AvaNi mAsOtsava in the piTTUt-tOppu at Madurai.

2. Refers to Siva wearing garlands of skulls and bones. kankAlamAli, kapAlamali etc.

3. Refers to Siva wearing the skins of the tiger and elephant demons that he flayed. Carmambara, ajinAmbara.

4. Refers to the story of the nAyannAr SiruttoNDar [believed to be the same as ParanjOti, the Cola sEnApati] who had to kill and cook his son siriyALa to satisfy a Bhairava’s vrata.

That you stood (ninRadu) ingratiatingly (pal= tooth; kATTi=showing) before the folks of the tricity (muppuram)---I don't know what this refers to. Shiva burnt the 3 cities but did he also ingratiate himself? (It could be a reference to his mendicant-look when he enticed the dhArukA vanam wives of the sages????)
On the day of the battle, a chariot had been prepared for Siva to ride on. The Earth was the chariot, Mount Meru was the bow, the Sun and the Moon were the wheels, etc. The Devas who were part of the chariot thought they were playing a very important role in the battle, forgetting the fact they had been helpless before the asuras who were the kings of the three cities constituting Tripura. Siva, to bring them to their senses, merely smiled at Tripura; his smile set the cities on fire and reduced them to ashes.

This is what the composer refers to when he asks, "Did I tell anyone that you attempted to ingratiate yourself with the asuras by grinning like a supplicant?"

Thus, ksi was correct in his post#35.
