Prof.Nagamani Srinath has rendered a rare kirtana of Tyagaraja at tiruvaiyyaru-it is set to a rare raga madhyamavarali-it is a madhyama varja janya of Kharaharapriya-this important input has been obtained by me thanks to Prof.Nagamani Srinath herself on e-mail. many thanks to you-ma'am ! I wanted to know of any other kirtanas in this raga-Mr.Lakshman, awaiting your inputs. Also let us discuss the raga lakshana & this rare kirtana of Tyagaraja on this forum.

I don't have any kritis listed in this rAgA. By the way which song of Tyagaraja was rendered by Nagamani Srinath?

Hi Mrinalini and Lakshman,

I think the rAga name is madhyamaravaLi. The song is most likely one that begins 'anudinamu...' and it carries Tyagaraja's mudra.

I had myself typed this as 'madhyamaramaNi' when I wrote a summary of Nagamani Srinath's concert on Sangeetham.com.

Regards,
Ganesh.

yup. the ragam is called madhyamarAvaLi. there is a nArayaNa tIrtar tarangam in this ragam which Veenai Gayathri renders.

Yes-that's right the kirtana is 'Anudinamu' & yes Mr.Lakshman-it should be madhyamarAvaLi, not 'varALi'.

The problem is that there is no song by Tyagaraja with the starting words anudinamu.

I couldn't find any kirtana starting with 'Anudinamu' in 'The Spiritual heritage of Tyagaraja' (I checked this immediately after hearing the song) but those are the starting words and 'Narayanaya namo Madhavaya' is a song I've heard Sri.OST sing at a concert I'd been to (at Coimbatore) where he elaborated the raga-he announced the name, but I didn't get it!

Perhaps you can email Nagamni Shrinath and get the text of the song.

Curious to know why this cannot be classified under Hemavati, if the madhyamam is varjyam.
Is it because it has more of a Kharaharapriya flavour to it??

Where a janya raga could fit under two (or more) melas there is a practice to list it under the mela with the lower melakartha number.

Using this schema, Mohanam is listed under Harikambhoji (28th mela) not Sankarabharanam, Vachaspati (64) or Kalyani (65).
