It was the inaugral concert of the 22nd anniversary of YACM and it couldn't have been better!
Sri. Prasanna Venkatraman gave a soul-stirring performance. The concert started with the famous Kanada varnam. Then came a beautifully woven Abogi Alapana which was followed by Thyagaraja's Manasu Nilpa. The Shubapantuvarali Alapana and Dhanyasi Alapana were rendered with aesthetic classissm. The Dhanyasi kriti was new to me. It sounded like a Muthuswamy Dikshathar composition.
The striking feature about Prasanna's music is the feel in his voice, especially in the higher octaves, rising from the inherent huskiness, which takes the listeners to a different plane.
Amrutha Murali provided sedate and adequate support on the violin.
The mridangist Sri.Harinarayanan enthralled the listeners throughout the concert. The clarity, timing, precision and maturity with which he played left the audience gaping with awe and admiration at this new youngster. The tani was woven with intricate rhythmic patterns and reached a crescendo at the end. Also the support that he lent while playing for the songs was remarkable.
Sri.Rajarajan on the ghatam, provided able support, although one wondered if his mike volume could have been a bit lower during the tani avartanam.
On the whole it was a fantastic beginning to the 5-day long series.
