Sudha Raghunathan - Vocal
Dr Karthick - Ghatam
Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan - Mridhangam
Raghavendra Rao - Violin

I am just too excited after the concert. What a beautiful concert - a treat for all those attended. The momentum started building by 4:45 for 6pm start. The venue being small, rasikas rushed in early to avoid being left out. I feel that even if one had to wait for 2-3 hrs in line to enter, it was well worth it. Expectations ran high as I was talking to people around and i think expectations are quite high for her concert. The concert began a little earlier and it was off to a smooth start. I could not hear the ghatam for quite some time. Our tryst with sound persons continue! Dr Karthick himself told the person many a time. Still no improvement. The most exciting thing was the main piece. She started with "Dinamani Vamsa Thilaka Lavanya". After doing a wonderful round, she handed it over to the people who speak with the hands. Karthick weaved his magical spells with the ghatam which was received with a thunderous applause . And the Guinness record holder ramakrishnan joined the party(He has the record for playing continuously for 72 hours). Beautiful exchanges and individual brilliance enthralled the audience. It was a treat. When the thani got over, she took off with her voice. But i tell you, I could not hear her at all. The round of applause went on for about 2-3 minutes. We were just clapping our hands, not knowing other means of expressing our happiness and saluting the performance. She was also very impressed with it and even remarked that after listening to such a wonderful thani, i dont know what to sing. It was an electrifying performance. After a small announcement gap, the electrifying atmosphere continued with beautiful renderings. In RTP, she sparkled magic by weaving lyrics from different songs(Alaipayuthe, Kuzhal oodhi manam ella ,...). It caught all of us by surprise , much to our ecstasy. Just when i thought, it is all done she began Oothakadu's "Vishimakara Kannan." It had us laughing over all the song. I actually felt the naughtiness of krishna listening to her. Amazing Sudha!! And equally wonderful team.. Then the rasikas request reflected with Kurai Ondrum Illai , baro krishnayya,.. and one new song. It was overall a beautiful one. I almost missed out mentioning her "Ganamoorthe", which she rendered well in the beginning.

Post concert, the stage was not at all visible. Lot of us climbed on to catch a glimpse of the artistes and to express our contentment and joy! She could not move an inch with scores of rasikas cornering her and team and showering the praises. I am just waiting to listen to her once more! Special mention once again goes to "Vishimakara Kannaan". It was marvellous. She appreciated for having a wonderful audience and she told she is really happy to have a very good audience!! And she speaks very good kannada as well :)

She also did an alapanai in Mandari followed by Harikesanallur's Atishaya vara prasadini

I just wished the concert went on for an hour or more!

Love

Balsree

Sudha's choice of songs speaks of her acumen in planning a concert: not just a token dAsara kriti but several, including the viruttam; it is an assembly of guruvAyurappan bhaktAs and many songs about bAlakrishnA including an imaginatively wrought RTP.
Even a huge hall gets filled to capacity when Sudha is in town. I bet it was standing room only for many. Did the line snake around the lake? A treat for the patient rasikAs, it seems. An ensemble like that and the performing percussionists lifting the concert to great heights, no doubt it was enjoyable. Sudha is highly articulate (in kannaDa as well) and is an audience pleaser. Her manners as a professional artiste are to be admired. With such accompanists and with an adoring audience, she would have sparkled...

Braindrain,
The verse from krishNASTakam goes 'vasudEva sutam' (son of vasudEva). vAsudeva is krishNA himself. :)

Shankar,

It could be be "vasudEva sutam" and not "vAsudEva sutam". Son of vasudEva ..

Sindhu ,

I've not learned carnatic and all my little knowledge is from listening to concerts. I'm not very familiar with jayanthasrI. I listened to it again and thought it is hindOLam , unless there are similarities between hindOLam and jayanthasrI. Balsree or others attended the concert can confirm this. I re-iterate, I could be wrong.

Braindrain, we have a thread runninig on Jayanthasri - it is indeed very similar to Hindolam except that it takes panchamam on the descent. I am not aware of this particular kriti though

The concert was in Bombay and not Bangalore. If rasikAs have to listen to the same repertoire over and over again in the same city, then I am with you. We can't expect musicians to change the song list every time they perform. Sometimes, they get better by practising them on stage in various venues in different towns. I agree with you on being disappointed if they give the same fare over and over again in the same city for any number of years...

I agree with arasi. Certain songs thus become trade mark of theirs.. Isn't maharajuram family known for Arabhi, Mohanam? Did fans complain that MVI & MVS sing that often?

With due respects to stalwarts, who didn't repeat the songs, SSI, MSS, DKP? SSI sang Amba kamakshi upteen times, DKP for tamil songs like Theerada vilayattu pillai, Naan oru vilayattu bommaya, etc.. I have heared DKP saying that unless you sing the song 1000 times, it won't become perfect!

Sudha's RTP in Mumbai was in Raga Simhendra Madhyamam, not Todi. Atleast she is industrious enough to change the raga. And compared to some others, it is not an avial RTP, it is a meaningful one, in which she indulges in trikalam etc. I assume the pallavi was in Tishra Ata (2 kaLai). I am not evry much for singing of the first lines of various songs of Othukkadu, but that is my personal opinion, many many in the audience are able to relate to the logic of ragamalika raga choice when she sang the first lines only. So be it, it was atleast educative to some.

Just listened to the varnam from the concert ... Since when do people sing only the mukthayi swarams in 2nd speed? Either sing the whole varnam in 2 speeds or dont sing a varnam.

Blah blah, I'd say that was a relatively minor liberty considering all the tampering/refinement (depending on the way you look at it) that compositions have suffered/benefited from over the years. However this is a rather curious variation - wonder what the reason could be - surely not for want of time...it would hardly take a minute to sing the varnam sahithya in second speed..
