I am Gaurav, one of the founders of RadioVeRVe. RadioVeRVe (http://radioverve.com) is a 24x7 internet radio station that plays only independent music from India. As part of the radio station, we have recently launched a dedicated classical music channel which features a wide variety of classical musicians and are still in the process of adding artistes and content to the channel.

Do check it out and let us know what you think of it.

Do let us know any suggestions you might have for programs and general content on the channel!

Thanks in advance!

I find that it stops playing after a couple of minutes and goes into a "buffering mode" from which it never recovers until the page is refreshed....after which the song starts playing again...I am sure it has something to do with my internet connection (although I get healthy download > 100 Kbps speeds from sangeethapriya for instance) or just my techno-idiocy showing through...

I've never used internet radio before so a quick tutorial would be useful

I experienced the same as well. Intiially it played for 10 minutes or so and then it stopped. I hit the Play button again and then it played for a while OK. On the whole, this morning the website is performing much better than last night.

It is a good idea to have a means and channel for artists who are not yet in the top tier in terms of popularity and visibility. And a great way for the rasikas to discover new artists.

We are still in the process of getting more music. You will see a LOT more music coming up on the site very soon.

In the meanwhile, any ideas you guys have for shows on the station? something that we could put together to get more people interested in the music?

Hi Gaurav, if you're still tuned in...I tried the channel again yesterday and the glitches seem to have been sorted out. There was also an interesting interview with young vocalist, Manasi Prasad. Some suggestions in response to your post above:

A channel focussing on upcoming talent is not a bad idea but I am really not sure whether that would be the thing to do given that your market is rather small (as a rough estimate, 25-30% of the members of this BB - maybe 2-3 times that if you're thinking HM as well).

Networking with upcoming talent makes sense since they are more likely to share music free of cost, which again translates into a lower cost structure for you. But that needs to be balanced with some big names as well...your association with Ananya would be useful in this direction given their huge collection from festivals they have held over the years. Also if you could find a way of getting across to private collectors and catch hold of some vintage recordings, you'll have many members of this board flocking to your channel!

The playlist currently features young artists, mostly from Bangalore. While Bangalore is producing a lot of talent these days, the centre of action continues to be in Chennai. Even if you are not physically present in the city you need to find ways of networking with artists there...

You had mentioned in the above mentioned interview, the need to reach out to a larger audience. To me fusion/light music is not the way to go (unless you want to change the focus of the channel completely)...you could instead focus on the educational aspects and bring down the barriers that keep people away from CM. You could have programmes, for instance, on raga identification, programmes based on ragas and maybe in small doses, film songs based on classical compositions.

For much of the above, you need to get a musically proficient consultant on board (and young musicians these days tend to be excellent communicators). The Manasi Prasad interview for example, was lively and enjoyable but did not get across to the rasika in me. Read the translation of the Sanjay interview posted in a parallel thread - that is the kind of stuff that would appeal to the serious rasika.

Some time spent listening to the Shruthi channel of Worldspace would give you a great example of how a channel like yours should work. Interviews, explanations of raga lakshanas, discussions on maestros - Worldspace has been doing all of these wonderfully well. I know you wouldn't have the kind of access to the same level of resources but a lot of what they are doing can be replicated at a reasonably low cost (their formidable CD library would probably be the biggest obstacle).

Most of the points above have to do with making a choice between focussing on the serious rasika and spreading a wider net. The latter course of action would definitely drive away the serious listener although you may attract some crossovers from film music, who may possibly contribute more eyeballs than CM rasikas. But that would defeat the objective of an enterprise such as yours...

In conclusion, accept my congratulations for a laudable initiative. It could potentially make a huge difference to the art (as well as your bottomline) if taken forward the right way. Get musicians actively involved - that is the key..

Vijay - I completely agree with your view and the biggest obstacle for us has been the content (which we are working on and have some sort of an idea how to go about it) and also the expertise like you said.

We are working on both the best we can and I will have an update for you about the same very soon.
