Smt. Vasumathi Desikan , a senior disciple of Vidwan A. Sundaresan sang at Raga Sudha Hall, on 9.9.2007 under the auspices of Naada Inbam. The concert was in memory of A.S. on his birthday.
She began with a Varnam Kavave Nannu Brovave in Kalyana Vasantam composed by A. S., The mood of the evening was set with exceedingly good renditions of Kari Kalabha Mukham (Saveri), Cheraravadhemira (Rithigoula) and the immortal Swarajathi Kamakshi in Yadukulakambodhi,.
Balambikaya (Kanada), a Krithi I had not heard before was followed by a sensitive raga version of Varali prefacing
KarunaJudavamma . Kripajuchutakuvelara (Chayatarangini) was a lilting prelude to a relaxed elaboration of Sankarabharanam bringing out its regal majesty. Enthuku Beddala with neraval and swaras at Veda Sastra Thathvarthamulu thelisi was the crown piece.
After a soothing Thani, Chediyaya Valvinaigal, a Virutham in Mohanam, Hindolam, and Hamasanandi was followed by Srinivasa Thiruvenghadava. She concluded the concert with another unheard Krithi Chandiswaram (Behag--Meesu Krishna Iyer) and a Tiruppugazh .
The music rendered was a testimony to the diligence of Sri Sundaresan in instilling into his disciples the quest for classical values.. .It was solid and unostentatious music all through.. The movement of the voice in all the sthayis was full of Sowkhyam.
A little more exposure to the craft of concert making, would shape her as a front runner . Sri Coimbatore Dakshinamurthy, the Senior Violinist remarked at the end of the concert that he was tempted to speak about the dignified solid music but refrained from doing so, as he did not want to interrupt the musical atmosphere
Anantha Padmanabha’s raga versions of Varali and Sankarabharanam , his sensitive support to the main artiste all through and the self abnegating soft play by B. Sivaraman added to the listening pleasure
