Smt. Sulochana Pattabhiraman is amazing. I wish more of the reviewers for news papers had her skills and were of her caliber.

Yes, Sulochana mami is really amazing. She is going to be honoured by His Holiness of Shri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam,
on 30th of this month.

I missed myself at the concert. I haven't heard Aruna Sayeeram sing (live) any of Ambujam Krishna's songs. While Ambujam Krishna's compositions are dear to me, the spin Aruna would have given to them would have been interesting to hear. 'en tAi nI anRO?' in Arabhi is one of my favorites.

correction: while Anantalakshmi Sadagopan has tuned many of Ambujam Krishna's songs (they are coming out in the near future, I hear), the credit goes to VVSadagopan for tuning 'gAna mazhai pozhiginRAn kaNNAn'. He was the first vidwan to tune her songs (Gitamala vol:1)...

Just as we expect a selection committee member in cricket to have playing experience at the highest level (say, a minimum of 10 tests and 25 one-days), I think a reviewer should have some performing experience (or should have groomed a few good performers) for his/her opinion to have some weight. A good reviewer should have the MUSICAL - not literary - wherewithal to point out which were the plus and minus points of a particular performance. In this respect, I think it is a good thing that The Hindu is featuring people like Sulochana mami & V. Subrahmaniam , whose words have the added weight of a performer's experience. That factor is sorely lacking in people like SVK, whose musical knowledge and English skills are both of dubious quality, making theie 'reviews' insufferable!

While I agree with your citing Smt. Sulochana Pattabhiraman as an excellent example, I am not sure that Sri V. Subramaniam's reviews are truly impartial.

Well... contrary to what you and some other in-house veterans felt, I thought Sri. VS's reviews last season were frank & honest and that he took some undeserved heat, naturally from some of the artistes he mildly criticized.

Talking of the review of Smt.Aruna Sairam's concert, the reviewer has left out one obvious name , who has tuned so many of Ambujam Krishna's songs, some of which are high on the popularity chart. This is none other than Sangita Kalanidhi T.N.Seshagopalan. Of course she has written the word "among other stalwarts" .He happens to be one who is worthy of mention.

Smt.Ambujam Krishna's, Geetamala -3 has 26 of them tuned by him and 26 of them tuned by Dr.S.Ramanathan. Smt.Krishna has thanked them in the prologue for it.

Some of the popular songs are : Azhaga Azagha,Guruvayoorappane appan, Endha mugam ninaindalum, Adinaiye kanna to name only a few .

Another stalwart is Sangita Kalanidhi R.Vedavalli- who has a tuned a few songs and one who has been a kind of guiding friend to Smt.Ambujam Krishna in many of her musical ventures.

gopalank, if you do not know your facts please don't make unwarranted accusations on an individual. Shri SVK, or S.V.Krishnamurthy, is the younger brother of Shri S.V.Parthasarathy. He is a well trained musician who was giving programmes on the AIR in the fifties and has even performed in the afternoon slot of the Music Academy.

gopalank, actually his English skills are quite superlative. which is probably one of the reasons why he gets away with what he does!

Hallo CMLovers,
please refer to the thread "THE HINDU FRIDAY REVIEWS" -(23.8.2007-) under general discussions(page 3) of our forum, wherein rasikas have more than adequately out poured and their views simply due to the fact letters to the editor (Hindu) do not seem to have any effect whatsoever over the biased criticisms regularly perpetrated by one of it's musically half-baked reviewers.

I think it is worthwhile to mention the role played by Smt .Ananthalakshmi Sadagopan in tuning Ambujam Krishna's compositions.one audio cassette has also been released by her..As students of Satguru Sangeetha Samajam Tallakulam,Madurai, we were encouraged to sing a few of her (Ambujam Krishna 's)compositions. Our guru Ramanathapuram Sankarasivam will permit us to sing these songs during concluding part of Thyagaraja Utsavam(just to imbibe in us the importance of such Aradhana he will collect a small token of 2to 5rupees extra to be deposited in a Hundial -dating back to the year 1962-64).I also recall having heard that Madurai .N.Krishnan had also tuned a few of her songs.(Speaking from my memory).

Invariably in all the reviews, irrespective of language/critic only a line finds a place as regards to the performance of purcussionists. Why this disparity. Good appreciation will definitely boost the morale of the artistes. Ofcourse violinist gets few lines more.

How can we assume all reviewers know enough about the intricacies of percussion to give a good review?

Srkris, precisely - and that being the case, some of them really should not be reviewing at all

Umm... why only percussion? How can we assume all reviewers know enough about the intricacies of CARNATIC MUSIC to give a good review? ;)
