Vijay, thank you.
Arasi-ji, all the concerts are by the shishya-s. The guru-s are honoured before the concerts.
Btw, I attended Manasi Prasad's concert today - she was excellent. Will post the song list and a review as soon as I get the time.

You're welcome Nivedita. I would have loved to come for your concert but duty beckons and I am off again tomorrow morning.
Good to hear that Manasi Prasad is doing well - we had a long discussion earlier on her giving up "Goldman's Sacks" for the sake of Carnatic Music! If nothing else, it is good to know that our favourite art is worth so much! Unfortunately I was too busy wrapping up things to attend any concerts today...a report would be nice

Yup, I did. (http://nivedita-n.livejournal.com/)Thanks Nivedita - hope you had a good time at the concert!
Thank you

Shri R.K.Padmanabha's kriti was very nice. If my memory serves me right, it had the rAga mudrA incorporated in the pallavi like this: rangana tOrisO vADirAja maNi - rangana pADisO tyAgarAja.

Nivedita,
I have seen your posts in the past on the song lists of concerts of your gurus. I knew that you were a serious student.
I went to your journal just now and saw some of your blogs. Your sense of humor is very appealing. The 'wedding concert' is a highly entertaining piece. My! You DO look like you are 28, for a 20 year old in those pictures. THAT old! Seriously, it is only the stage that looks old, like some of us!
Hope I can listen to you in concert too. So long as I do not show my rAgA ignorance, I would not be remarked upon in your blogs.
Good singing and learning--oh, the academic part too...

Goldman Sachs vs CM!!! TOO GOOD... Its extremely inspiring to hear about ppl like Manasi, considering I'm working towards getting in to an IIM myself but am also learning music professionally and am very serious about it... As a matter of fact, Goldman Sachs even comes down to my college to offer placements.
And tambUri mITidava reminds me of a small anecdote my friend had once narrated. It seems Shri T.M.Krishna had once pointed out to Manasi that the word was tambUrA and not tambUri, as she had pronounced it while announcing the accompanists for a concert of his at B'lore. She immediately retorted by actually rendering the relevant kriti to illustrate that the word was tambUri in kannaDa! Awesome going!

I here's wishing that you too will one day give up a job with Goldman for the sake of CM! I think it is a good idea to acquire the qualification and then focus on CM since you always have back-up options - our world is very cruel to unsuccessful musicians...look at Sanjay - I believe that his name is actually a marketing weapon for his company thanks to the number of rasikas in Chennai's corporate circle!
It must take a lot of confidence to retort in that manner but I am wondering if "tamburi" is not a contextual usage i. e the object in the sentence (e.g "Tamburavai X vasippar" versus "X, Tambura" versus "Tamburavil X")...anyway, I am sure being a native kannada speaker, she would have got it right...

I was there during this concert when this incident took place , sometime during midnight of Jan 25th 2006 (to celeberate Republic Day) at IIM Bangalore. This was a dusk to dawn series of concerts which I look forward to attend every year at IIMB.Jigyaasa wrote:Goldman Sachs vs CM!!! TOO GOOD... I do not remember Manasi correcting Krishna immediately. Possibly she had informed him later. Most musicians from Tamilnadu need to understand that in Karnataka , Mridangam is pronounced as Mridanga , Khanjira as Khanjari , Ghatam as Ghata , Tambura as Tamburi. Possibly Krishna was not aware ( as are most performers from TN) , but considering that he performs in Bangalore atleast once in a month , this is something he should know by now.

while one wishes this singer the best, and does not wish to detract from her commitment to music, i hardly think this is so unusual or in any way a "sacrifice".vijay wrote:You're welcome Nivedita. I would have loved to come for your concert but duty beckons and I am off again tomorrow morning.

there are singers in this country who have taken far greater risks and taken the "plunge" in a truer sense. i can think of a few examples off-hand: sowmya (iit?), charulatha mani (guindy engg), trichur ramachandran who dropped out of medicine etc. there are many more i am sure.
the decision to take up music *full-time* is far more courageous i.e. as opposed to choosing an india-based job (also well-paid i'm sure!) instead of overseas.
the difference between amateur and professional musicians is usually very evident too. i strongly feel this is one of the causes of lowering of standards.
again, this is in way of a general observation and is not to detract from anyone's effforts to pursue classical music. an amateur or part-time pursuit of the art is infinitely better than not taking it up.

tambUri is the noun in kannaDa
tambUriyannu nuDisu
tambUri nuDisu
tambUriyaa nAda
tambUrige jIvALa hAKu
are the different case endings.
I am reminded of two kannaDa songs with the word tamboori right in the pallavi
tambUri mITidava bhavAbdi dATidava (purandara dAsa)
taravalla tagi ninna tambUri svara, bidade bArisadiru tambUri (shishunALa sharrief)

i was on stage playing the "tambura" for my guru when this happened.
what happened was rather informal and casual.
manasi prasad used the kannada term "tamburi" while sri tm krishna pointed it out to her that the correct sanskrit term was "tambura".
she gracefully corrected herself and there ended the whole thing - without any love lost
on an aside, i do remember manasi prasad telling me that she is currently working for a leading investment bank here in bangalore.

Aha, Mr. X surfaces! Thanks for the clarifications Ramakriya and Ravikiran...Jigyaasa you're welcome...
Ramakriya could you give me the meaning of the Pallavi line of Tamburi Meettidava - it is a lovely piece. I have so far understood it as "Strum the tambura" but something tells me I am striking the wrong note there!

Here is the sAhitya for the ugAbhOga:
tambUri mITidava bhavAbdhi dATidava
tALava taTTidava suraroLu sEridava
gejjeya kaTTidava kharaLede meTTidava
gAyana pADidava harimUruti nODidava
purandara viTTalana nODidava vaikuNThakke Odidva
He who strums the tambUri, he who crosses the ocean of life
He who keeps the rythm, he who becomes one with celestials
He who wears the anklets, he who stamps the chest of wicked men
He who sings, he who sees Hari
One who sees Purandara vithala
Is the one who sprints to VaikunTha

Few years back I had a chance to enjoy a whistling concert by a young school student by name Nivedita at Raga sudha hall. She was a disciple of Suguna purushothaman. Is that girl and this Nivedita one and the same. Since the elctronic media technicians came late the poor girl was asked to perform once again for a coverage.
