I was motivated to write about this raga after hearing DKJ's recording. His swaraprastaram is very interesting.
Thanks Ramakriya for the structure of SimhavAhini.
shishya-This DKJ cassette recording has in addition the famous kalagada song of shyama shastri 'pArvathi ninnu nere'; MD's shuddasaveri song - EkAmresha nAyike; a lovely Devagandhari and Papanasham Shivam's 'shArade vIna vAdana vishArade'.
The otherside has an excellent Thodi followed by 'Sri Subramanyo ' of MD. I have wriitten all these from my memory. There may be some mistake.

I think we are talking about the same recording. For a while this CD was literally stuck in my car CD player... so god knows how many times I have heard it and I must say I enjoyed it every time.

In my opinion, musicians can limit themselves in singing the krithi alone or a few avarthanam of svaras in these ragam-s. This is most sensible as it prevent entering into the territory of allied ragas.
Also, these ragam-s can be differentiated well when svaras are sung.

Yes Sarasangi, a beautiful raga is rarely heard except for Nikela dayaradu. Gopalakrishna Bharathi's which is great composition Unadu Tiruvadi no one sings.

Re: SimhavAhini
It's not a rule (as if rules are being followed everywhere
)
In a raga like this, where there is absence of a single svara only in arohanam or avarohanam, though a musician is conscious enough not to sound like it's allied ragam-s, due to the inherent structure of the scale, doing an alapanam either gives us either a sense of repetition or shade of its allies.
It is a sensible option to sing svaram where in identity is clearly shown.

Well tyAgarAja is making a point that omitting a note is essential when it comes to such scales, that might get something like a rAgA!

First Edition arts has posted a video on YouTube of TMK singing detailed thanam (almost eight minutes) followed by a lively and sprightly Nenarunchara.
