Hello,

Does anyone know the lyrics and if possible, word-word meaning of a Ragamalika Varnam "Kamala Jaasya" in Adi? I do not know the composer although the theme is Dashaavataram.

pA = pib = to drink, vibudhajAta = group of Gods
dAraNa = Killer, liteally, tear apart
prahlAdAvanOpAtta pratibhayanrharE:
prahlAda + avana + upAtta pratibhaya + nrharE = The fearful narahari form taken to protect Prahlada,

SitadhAra kuThAra ranjitabAhO,
Sita = Sharp and/or narrow, dhAra = edge,
harAdhItAmita shAstra = hara + adhIta + amita shAstra = Extensive knowledge learnt from Siva,
ripubhIma = fearful to enemies,

daSakaNThaghanavAta, ghana = thick, dense, vAta = wind.
sangaradhIra = Steadfast in war

sIrasamAkrSTa sArahastinapura,
sIra = plough. This may refer to the incident, when, Balarama in anger lifted the whole of Hastinapura with his plough.

sAyaka = arrow.

I always assumed it was sita, because the edge of a plough is narrow, and that is why the King of mythilA named the baby girl he found at the tip of a plough (sitAgrajamu) as sItA...

Si = verb: to sharpen: Sita = sharp, thin.
sita = white,
sitA = sugar
sItA = a furrow, the track of a ploughshare. The baby girl found in the track of the ploughshare is named 'sItA'.
There may be other interpretations also.

I have been informed by an authoritative source that this song by ST is a rAgamAlikA and not a padam or varNa.

This has been dubbed as a swarajati by many may be because of the many charanas. But this is neither 'sj' , padam nor varna . Just a ragamalika composition describing the " dashaavataaraas ". Moreover, this is a glorified bhajan, like a naamaavaLi , in sambodhana prathamaa vibhakti and there is no verb in the pallavi.

mAmavOdAra = mAmava + udAra = protect me, O Generous One!

Above meaning is not correct. It simply means " my generous one " . No verb for protection.

C1 : kamalajAsya --> kamalajasya . The words mean - one who had destroyed Hayaasura, the robber of Brahma's treasure of vedas " nigamaraashi " , fish avataar, my generous one. The line should be split as : kamalajasyahrtanigamarAshihayagrIvadamana , mInasharIra, mAmavOdAra

C2 : dhrta is not taking but " holding " . vibudha jAta --> vibudhajaata . It means " of divine birth " which is also devas. The line should be split as : dhrtamandarabhUdhara, divyakUrmarUpa, pItasudhAmOdita, vibudhajAta.

C3 : sukarAkAra vasudhAdhAra --> shukaraakaara vasudhaadhara ( holding the earth in between his long wisdom teeth on the pig snout. The line should be split as : ghOrahiraNYAkSadAraNa, shukaraakaaravasudhaadhara , jagadAdhAra

C4 : prahlAdA vanOpAtta prati bhayanrharE --> prahlaadaavanOpaattapratibhayanrharE or also prahlaadaavanOpaadapratibhayanrharE . The line should be split as : prahlAdAvanOpAttapratibhayanrharE, prahlAditasajjana , daityanidhana

C5 : The line should be split as : kalitavAmanarUpa, khaNDitOddhatamahAbaligarvajAla, suguNapAla

C6 : The line means " hey Bhargava Rama, who delights in bearing the sharp edged ploughing axe on his shoulder, having studied many shastras from Shiva and destroyer of enemies " . The line should be split as : shitadhArakuTAraranjitabAhO, harAdhItAmitashAstraripubhIma, bhAragava rAma

C7 : sangaradhIra --> saarangadhara ; another version is " sangraamadhiira " . The line should be split as : manukulatilaka, vancanaparadashakaNThaghanavAta, raghuvIra saarangadhara.

C8: The line should be split as : sIrasamAkrSTasArahastinapura, ghOrapralambaharabaladEva, shUra

9: nandanIyatamabrndAvana --> One who enjoys being in brindaavana and makes the garden happy . The line should be split as : nandanIyatamabrndAvana, racitakundasAyakalIla, bAlagOpAla

10: The line means one who will take the form of kalki at the end of Kaliyuga, one with the colour and tejas of a fully water-loaded cloud. The line should be split as : kaliyugAntabhAvikalkirUpa, sajalajaladAbhanijashObha, padmanAbha.
