I agree that this forum no longer allows for the occasional quirk in personality
Yes it does! I'm still here, for proof!

And I'm also proof that the simple enjoyer of music, without much experience or knowledge, is still around.

enjoyer of music: a rasikA
So, you are in the right place Nick--and with other simple enjoyers. Count me in!

Must confess at this juncture that one of the reasons that attracted us to this forum was Coolkarni Saab's weighty posts, flawlessly authored, laced with a touch of humor, and completely self effacing. We have a lot to learn from men of such erudition. We do not know him personally, have not even seen him, but hope that he gets back here soon!

In my experience, age is something that you are least conscious of when you enter this forum. It is all about being young and enthusiastic in our search and appreciation for CM. There is so much to learn here and there are those who are experts in many areas of CM. We have an impressive gallery of CM stars too.

We seniors keep young by the magic of CM and by interacting with younger rasikAs. My only regret is that we cannot retain as much as they do of what we can learn here!

I am planning to be in Chennai during the season. Would love to meet other rasikas then. Also hope to have my synthesizer with me.

Hey I'm a new member.

I guess I'll introduce myself.

I'm 15 years old living in Detroit, I came back from Chennai a couple days I learned Mridangam from Guruvayur Dorai for a month.

I participated in the last Clevland Aradhana Competition for the first time and got 1st place.... well thats really about it.

Maybe some of you saw me I sat behind Dorai sir during the T.M Krishna concert.

Yes, we all should meet, and assign faces to those names(:-

How about arranging one concert in December season on behalf of rasikas.org, or a lecdem??

That's a great idea...also it would be nice to have a fun "mock cutcheri" with participation from forum members (amateurs only)...I know someone here who can play the mrudangam and surely we can find someone to sing...as for violin accompaniment, allow me to wipe 6 month's dust off my violin, which has been used exactly once so far...don't worry folks, I don't intend to play it myself!

We could make it really embarassing by inviting all the pros and vidwans who have joined the board recently to be the audience!

But I'm always open to playing music just for fun. Just I haven't practiced for a year or two now <Blush>

Ah yes, the Kanjira vidwan has already been found! We just need a vocalist, violinist and mridangist to accompany him now!!

In the same spirit, I'd be happy to sing any time. This is, of course, as long as no stone-throwing takes place. I hope to meet more forumites during this season!

Nick,
I wonder if you are a ji, avl or sir! For someone of his stature, NSG is humility personified. I must come across as a rude person wanting to do away with respectful addresses! I still can't stop those who address me as 'madam', however much I am happy with just my pseudonym...

Arasi, now that we have not only professional musicians in our midst, but eminent musicians at that, this becomes something of a dilemma to me.

These are people that I would not hesitate to address as Shri, Sir, or -ji in person.

But somehow, in the forum, I have never been happy with these titles, for members or non-members, even for past musicians or those of great stature.

So I hope it does not become a habit, and I also hope nobody will take offence if it does not happen.

We all here know how to give respect for accomplishment, but also we are meeting here as people.

Many of our members are too modest, perhaps (Arasi? Only recently I stumbled accross a thread showing you have a published CD) and we never know the true extent of their accomplishment.

Some of our members fulfill the role of guru when the answer in technical threads, and are generous to us with their knowledge.

But I have the feeling that they do so from generosity and the willingness to share, not from the desire to acquire a wider circle of shishyas calling them guruji.

I don't they came to the forum to occupy some senior rank --- and I don't think we should put that upon them!

I am enthusiastic learner of violin. Though I have completed the basics and have completed the geethams, I have reached the
aadi thala varnams. But i find it very difficult to
perform in violin with gamakas. Actually what we learn is the plain note with a little
bit of gamakas. Can any body explain where i can get the basic on playing violin with gamakas. The Youtube sites which contain these articles are somewhat blurred in as much the music and the visuals shown are happening at two different time slots means there is a time lag. Can you suggest some other useful sites in addition to this. thanks

Dear brother-member, unnikrishnan, If you are having a broadband internet connection, you can visit ‘Youtube’ either as a Registered or even non-registered person, type ‘karnataka-violin-lessons’ in search window and click. You will get more than 25 Nos. of Laya exercises, violin fingering exercises and One –Varna-demonstration – all including in that. Broadband internet connection facilitates you to remove the lag. Go through them and tell me what do you want. If you are really interested to learn Violin and can practice vigorously for more than 4 hrs. a day regularly I shall try to teach and guide you. You can also go through the thread ‘Teaching/Learning Karnataka Violin’ under the main thread, Sangitakalalaya’ of this forum. amsharma.

I am also a new member and I hope that I will rise to the expectations of the forum, though my knowledge in CM is basic, though I had my arengetram in Mrudangam at the age of 13 yrs. But I couldn't pursue further in that line. My son is a vocal performer in carnatic music. And it will be my endeavour to encourage him.

hello to one and all.
i have just joined this community.i thought it interesting not because some classical vidwans have joined this forum(nallavela enge naan adhukkaga thaan join pannennnu therinjupoccho innu nenachen)but because carnatic music is still discussed in pure untainted form.

my namaskarams to all members.
