The concert was a very fulfilling one. The song selection was very carefully done and after each rAga AlApanai, there was kriti, which one dint expect at all. All the AlApanais were very skillfully done. The svarams were all measured and made sweet. All the kriti renditions were perfect and made one sit up to listen with each sangati falling perfectly every time it is sung. The voice of Sri Jayaraman was very resonating. At 76, Sri Jayaraman is still giving us amazing music of the highest quality. One only hopes to hear more off such veterans.

Sri Sundareswaran was very good all thro' the concert and provided good support. Sri Govindarajan was playing with very good anticipation. His playing kept getting better with every piece and was in tandem with the kriti that is being sung. Sri Kannan provided able support to the percussion department. The tani was good as well.

Good to read reviews of veterans who give such good performances. Thanks, Bharath.

SrInivAsA! tiruvEngaDamuDaiyAy!, addressing him (not tiruvEngaDAmuDaiyAn--third person).

Whose composition is mayilAgi kailAya nAtanai?

If I had to guess, I would go for P. Sivan - another composition on his beloved karpa(k)gavallI!

Could be. Periasami Tooran is another guess.

That is a concise yet thorough review. Sorry to be nitpicking, rbharath, but I am sure you MEANT to say that each kriti was preceded by an AlApanA, for after all , one would expect a kriti/pallavi after each AlApanA !

i think bharath means to say that the choice of kriti was unexpected. :)

English is quite an ambiguous language indeed. When I read it, I first parsed it along the same lines as Sundara Rajan did but then the context demanded it has to be parsed the other way as venkatpv indicated.

i know that i have a style of writing that makes it ambiguous to many a reader. However, writing in such a rather lousy lingua franca, that is used in the forum, does it make any difference?

Bharath,
No big deal. We all have the problem of dealing with this once in a while. Yes, the language which binds us, does not fully express and explore aspects of CM which has to do with several of our own languages. Yet, we wouldn't be a strong force in discussing CM if we didn't have good old English to come to our rescue.

Go to M.S. Sheela's concert thread and see another example of this...

Sanskrit would be unambiguous but then our user count will be 30 instead of 3000 ;)

Bharath, as Arasi mentioned it is a not a big deal, in fact it is a fascinating aspect of langugages and communication in general. I always enjoy reading your reviews.

Sanskrit is not necessarily unambiguous considering the multiple meanings various words can have...
The original sentence above can be read in only one way. No ambiguity there.
It helps to use commas when required. Better still, re-state it as: 'after each alapanai, there was an unexpected kriti'.

But then 'an unexpected krithi' is 'a krithi that is not expected' :) ( just messing around )

I will let CML comment but Sanskrit words may have multiple meanings but it does not have ambiguity of grammatical forms like here: Is it the 'krithi' that is unexpected or 'the krithi being there' that is unexpected. Totally different grammatical forms in Sansrit I would think.

I had been to Sri.Sirkazhi Mama's residence. It is in Velayudha Raja Street in the Mandaveli Road (Opp to Rani Meyyammai School). A down to earth person and his wife had been in the Haridas Giri Bhajan Group. Full fledged Music Family. A treat to watch him taking classes with his "GaNeer Voice". I did see Sri.Satur A G Subramanyam's photo in the main hall and was told that he was learning Gurukulam under Sri.Satur. Thanks for the review.
