Madurai R. Sundar - Vocal
Sandhya Srinath - Violin
Srinath Balasubramaniam - Mridangam
Vivek Chellappa - Khanjira

1. Shri Mahaganapati - Gowla (S)
2. Swaminatha Paripalayashumam - Nattai (S)
3. Balagopala - Bhairavi (N,S)
4. Santhana Manjari - Santhana Manjari (R,S)
5. Marakatavallim - Kambhoji
6. Nirajakshi - Hindolam (S)
7. Ranganayakam - Nayaki
8. Shri Guruguha - Devakriya
9. Shri Rajagopala - Saveri (R,N,S,T)
10. Shri Venkata - Surutti
11. Mamava Pattabhirama - Manirangu

A good concert from Shri. Sundar. The pick of the concert, IMHO, was the short and effective neraval for Balagopala at Drona Karna, and the longer neraval for Shri Rajagopala at Dhiragraganya. Santhana Manjari alapana was detailed and enjoyable. The short renditions of Shri Guruguha and Shri Venkata were also very well done, with the Surutti especially grasping my attention, although it was at the fag end of the concert. There was also a minor faux pas in the Nattai kriti, where he appeared to forget the anupallavi (possibly because the preceding Gowla kriti's anupallavi also starts with Kama Janaka!).

Smt. Sandhya on the violin was decent throughout, with measured responses to Santhana Manjari and Saveri. Shri Srinath and Shri Vivek provided good percussion support and a solid thani, lasting almost 30 minutes. Enjoyable fare, overall.

Santhanamanjari seems to be a hot favourite with the TNS school...

venkat,
If the artiste and the sponsors have no objections, could we get a sampling? I have not heard dEvakriyA at all. SantAnamanjari would make it doubly nice...

i did not record it... SSVT releases its recordings that are available at the temple premises... there was also a lec-dem earlier in the day, which i could not attend, by Shri. Sundar explaining the handling of ragas by MD... apparently, he talked about all the kritis that he sang in the evening... during the vote of thanks, one of the organizers referred to the recording of the lec-dem (audio and video)...

Shri Guruguha was popularized by DKP, i am sure you can find it on musicindiaonline...

IIRC, DKP/DKJ have sung srI guruguha tArayASumAm in dEvakriya in several concerts/recordings. At least some recordings should exist on Sangeethapriya.

SrI guruguha in dEvakriya was the second kriti taught to me. We don't get to hear this often in concerts. I heard only DKP' s version

I've also never heard the kriti being sung by anyone outside of the DK Bani

I have heard Sri. S Ramanathan render the same... Smt. Sowmya, his disciple sings it often in her concerts.

Ranjani and Gayathri have rendered "Sri Guruguha Tharayaasumam" - devakriya (suddha saveri), in their "Saravanabava" album.

How can I ever forget now that dEvakriyA and my old pal Suddha sAvEri are different monikers for the same rAgA? Thanks, folks for your posts.
