Hello friends.

Is there a way to back up to an external hard disk, audio cds without ripping into MP3. Reason is that I would like to preserve the audio quality that comes with the CDs and not incur a loss by ripping into MP3.
Would .wma or .wav files help in preserving the quality as is. Or is there any other way ? I think the format in the audio cds is .cda if I am not mistaken.

Thanks and regards,

CDA stands for CD-Audio.

It is not possible to store any file in this format on the PC.

The closest alternative is to rip it to Wav, which is lossless and also not compressed. So file size will be huge

As you rightly pointed out, MP3 is a lossy codec although it offers compression. Another lossless codec (no quality lost) but has compression is called monkey audio (.ape extension).

You can see this at http://www.monkeysaudio.com/

I would say wave format is still by far the best if you can afford the disk space.
