madhyamAvati short sketch.

Another amazing concert in the series. With each day passing this series is becoming more and more enjoyable. AlApanais for kAnaDa, hamvIr, shanmukhapriyA, dEvakriyA, kalyANi, kAmbhOji were all amazing and very enjoyable. Some of them were crisp, but nothing short of being enjoyable. The svarams in kAnaDa, and the neraval and svarams at 'bhUsurAdi samastajana pUjitAbja caraNAya' were kept short and yet made an impact. All the kritis were rendered with great vigour and made it an memorable experience. As usual, Mami had included quite a few rare pieces and being 'kandha shashTi' day, mami played many pieces on 'Lord Subramanya'.

Smt Padmavathi and Sri Gomathi Shankar provided good support and played the kritis along with mami.

Sri Manoj Siva was amazing and played with good anticipation. His playing was much suited for the style of music of Smt Swaminathan. His tani was short and sweet.

A super seniors week, it has been! All of them giving excellent performances we realize, as we read your reviews.
How nice to see her picture too on rasikA's intro page! She has played a judicious mix of known and unknown kritis. Bless her...

I didn't enjoy this program.

No way would I presume to dispute its quality with my elders in this area, but it just wasn't good for me.

One point I can, I think, validly argue: what is the point of having three vinas playing together? I can understand vocal support as a help to the elderly vocalist who may not have the strength and stamina of previous years, but strength and stamina were not any problem to this lady.

More than one vina, for me, just hides the delicacy and subtlety of the soloist's play.

Much of the concert was, mind you, given solo: making me further wonder what was the point of the additional instruments on stage.

Maybe I just needed a night off...

well, at 86, mami says he does have problems playing together for a couple of hours or so. The second vINai is necessary for her to alternate neraval and svarams at times. though the music doesnt sound to have any problems, mami does say that it is not easy for her to play continously these days.

She usually plays with one supporting vINai only. on the particular occasion, she had two supporting vINais and i am told both the supporting artists did not play for all pieces. There were pieces when either of them did not play.

that aside, i truly well appreciate nick's feelings that he couldnt hear mami play clearly, coz of the accompanying vINais. may be you could consider visiting her and requesting her to play a few pieces of your choice. she lives quite close to your place and would be more than willing to have people come and listen.

Bharath - Thanks for bringing a legend like her to the fore for rasikas like us. I'm sure there are many of us who will take up the offer to visit her and listen to the divine music

On reflection, I think I was the victim of expectation.

Yes... she gave plenty of opportunity for us to listen to her playing alone; in fact her two companions seemed sadly unemployed for quite a lot of the concert.
