Please help me with this poll

Dear folks,

As some of you may know, I recently made available a free online software for creating carnatic music notations. Please see http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=4055 for details.

I am interested in finding out how many of the members here may actually have use for it. So I have created an online poll at
(Edited: POLL CLOSED) . I request those who are students, teachers and practioneers to partcipate in it. It is basically a 1-question poll and so should take like 5 seconds to complete. Please also note that the poll is completely anonymous and so you need not worry about privacy.

On the other hand, if you feel that you can voice your opinion (i.e. explain reasons behind your answer for the poll), please do so here. I am especially interested in reasons behind the third choice - i.e. where you do use notations but still find this not useful. I would like to know why, and whether something that is missing if available could make you change your answer.

A part of me thinks many people will find it useful, but a part of me also thinks that I am wrong and that it would just be a niche use (for example in that thread there have been a grand total of 4 approvals

- the thread has 911 views!

So I would very much appreciate your honest participation in this.

cmlover can you please make this non-sticky. I had taken down the poll (a couple of days ago) and forgot to mention.

The participation was downright pitiful- although the % of favorable opinion was high, the sample set was too small.

Sometimes one wonders, why even bother

. I am reminded of another forum member who had mentioned something similar to me in the past (in private).

don't despair. The majority will always be silent. There are more guests visiting here every day in comparison with registered members. Of course the guests cannot vote. I notice you had a very enthusiastic reception at Geetham. You are doing a marvellous service to keen students of CM. Of course it will be passe fro the traditionalists. Keep goiing!

Arun, apologies for staying silent. Sorry I haven't managed to try the software but started on the manual and must say it is one of the best I have come across. Did participate in the poll but didn't get a chance to try the tool and provide any feedback. I am sure there are many others using/trying out the software but in passive mode. The manual is helping me already.

I am one of these passive users. Sadly, I lack the expertise to provide useful feedback; and my notation needs are rare enough that I cannot adequately compare the arunk typesetter with adhoc Word/Excel attempts.

This is no reflection on the value of arunk's efforts. I have always been impressed by arunk's tools - they provide tremendously useful features, are extremely well-engineered, provide nifty user interfaces, and have detailed and clear user manuals. I can only wish that all software were written this well.

arunk, please continue to bother... your efforts are making it easier for beginners to explore this fascinating field - and to explore it slowly, at their own pace. Thank you!

thanks guys. I was indeed being (albeit wryly) humorous when I said "why bother".

I was just expecting more people to be willing to give their answer since it was a 1-question poll, and anonymous (and also guests here can indeed participate - the link is to an external webpage and not part of forum)

I do urge those who have connections with music colleges to bring this software to the attention of music students and encourage them to use it in preparing their presentations. Again performers should be aware of this so that they can refer aspiring music learners to get their notations standardized using this software.

Arun! May I also suggest that when you are fully satisfied to post the links at Karnatic.com so that music hunters for sahitya become aware of it and start using it.
