R.K.Srikanatn - Vocal
R.S.Ramakanth - Vocal Support
M.Chandhrasekaran - Violin
Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman - Mrudangam
B. S. Purushothaman - Khanjira

At the outset, I wish to thank R.K.Sriramkumar for the classique decoration that was on the stage as backdrop. The hall was equally full with rasikas and vidhwans.

Rks lit the light for the evening with the kAmbOji varNam of swAthi thirunAL, sarasija nAbha and made everybody feel as if it is an AlApana or a well-known krithi. UKS sir demonstrated the unique style for accompanying ata thALa varNam in a well-defined way.

There was nidhAnam in kAlapramANam and clear rendition in shrI mUlAdhAra chakra vinAyakA [shrI, Adhi 2kaLai, dIkshithar] with some interesting swara prasthAram as Ramakanth added some swaras of endharO mahAnu bhAvulu to it. UKS sir and MC played with perfect understanding and when sir faded the last three ‘thakadhina’s, in the ending, it sounded great.

jayamahishAsura mardhini of muthaiah bAgavathar in hamsadhwani stood different among the oft-sung populars and elevated the concert listening to a remarkable height. Ramakanth presented matching phrases for pallavi while doing the swaras. The prayOgam of Pa… nI… ga rI…. by chandhru sir was nice.

hariharaputhram in vasantha [dIkshithar] served as a piece of vigor. shrI kvn mama used to sing this a bit faster. UKS sir energetically embellished the song with some immortal and tailor made phrases, enveloped with the stamp of thanjavur shrI vaidhyanatha iyer, which reminded palghat shrI mani iyer’s accompaniment to ariyakkudi. The rasikas seem thrilled when he played an 80 aksharas kOrvai as an ending between the pallavi and anupallavi.

shrI rks soaked the rasikas with an AlApanA in sahana, like a soft gentle stroke with a peacock quill. He also kept the audience guessing by singing a phrase like “giripai nelakonna”in the beginning. pattaNam subhramaNya iyer’s ‘rAma ika nannu brOva….’ [rUpaka chApu] was rendered well with bhAvam. The avarOhaNa sangathi in “dhaya lEdhA”, implied charaNAgathi. Swaras followed. When shrI rks and ramakanth sang nI… dha pA… it conveyed various things as a sentence too. :)

thOdi was main. It said “ma[e]in hoom; mE thOdi hoom” in every sangathi. UKS sir and BSP played a sparkling thani. Moved by the presence of artistes like shrI psn, shrI trs, shrI t.v.vasan, n.ravikiran and other performers, sir presented a great display of thisram and kaNdam varieties and also played the kuraippu, mOrA and kOrvai in kaNda gathi. shrI rks accoladed sir for the reverberating thani and UKS sir and chandhru sir said, “one more 85 years you have to sing like this and we have to play for you”.

shrI rks concluded the concert with smarisuva janakella of puandharadhAsa in surutti, the slOkam “mangaLam kOsalEndhrAya” and ‘nI nAma’ in sourAshtram.

Dr. V. V. Srivatsa, maithreyi ramadurai [Music Academy] narasimman[asthika samajam, thiruvanmiyur] radhakrishnan[hamsadwani], boothalingam[ramana kendra], ramabadran [safe], jayalakshmi santhanam, k.s.kalidoss, ashok ramani, prema rangarajan, gayathri venkataraghavan, manoj siva, shree sundarakumar, delhi muthukumar, amrutha murali, vasudha ravi, swarna rethas, sandeep narayan, varalakshmi anandkumar, k.gayathri, barathi ramasubban, ishwarya ragavan were also seen enjoying the concert.

That was a great evening.

Well said, Erode! You brought the one of a kind concert to life. Even if you hadn't highlighted your post with the bold font :), we would have felt the impact of it. A true RKS concert , and with such august accompanists! May he give a centenary concert too, and may the accompanists on that momentous day be none other than MC and UKS !
And the very encouraging fact that musicians and scholars crowded in to listen to RKS!

Dear Erode 14

You write good reviews! I am new to this website. We are having the Maris Music Mela in Chennai on 25 December 2007 at Hotel Maris, and I understand you are performing too.

How about writing some nice reviews of concerts to be performed during the Mela? Dr. N. Ramani and Shri O.S. Thiagarajan are slotted to perform that day.

Regards.

just to mention in passing about RKS. I have met him a couple of times when he was at mysore and I must tell u that he is a extremely 'santrupta' blissful jeevi. There is a great sense of spiritual ecastacy and divine tranquility about him..When I met him for the first time, I thought I just met an emperor .

Recently, I had the privilege of hosting Vidwan Ramakanth in Kolkata while he was here visiting the Sunderbans (yes, he is a teacher of biology, an avid naturalist and also a keen photographer). It was touching to hear him speak reverentially of his guru's music. We were listening to Srikantan Sir's inimitable darbar - the compositions mundu venuka, showrey... Ramakanth went on to explain how Sir was very meticulous in matters of notating the compositions that he learnt. He highlighted Sir's contributions as a gifted tunesmith, particularly of dasara padas. I didn't know that we owe it to Srikantan Sir for the music of compositions like daasana maadiko (nadanamakriya) and narayana ninna naamada smaraneya (shuddha dhanyasi).. Apparently, the impetus for such creative endeavors derived from the need to feature special programs while Srikantan Sir served as a member of the staff on All India Radio!!

RKS: No, Not at all. She has made so much name and fame as though she was born to sing suguma sangeeta. That is also a form of music.
ramakriya,

Rajesh .This is a sample.
I think it generally applies to Music that is easy on the ears .Bhava Geethe probably signifies the same thing, but i leave that to the experts.

I grew up on a staple diet of Sugama Sangeetha and feel indebted to the likes of RK Srikantan-MS Sheela-Rathnamala Prakash(And ofcourse AIR Bangalore-Bhadravathi and Dharwar) for instilling in me , at a very tender age, the taste for good music, through their Sugama Sangeetha Programs.
Arasi can do justice to the lyrics , which will bring out the grandeur of this genre fully.

Here is another sample from a Lost World-Resurrected for my sake by Knandagopal.

Thank you very much Ramakriya. Found it very interesting. Thanks also to M S Nataraja for having interviewed. It is nice to hear musician speaking in addition to singing.

Sounds like advice to a new bride - vaguely along the lines of 'nalla peNamaNi avaLE nalla peNmaNI'! But very melodious. Is this really purandara dAsa's composition, or is his name just invoked in the lyrics?

I haven't listened to it yet, but I think the song in question is "buddhi mAtu hELidare kELabEkamma, mans shuddhiyAgi ganDanoDane bALabEkamma - a composition of purandara dAsa. It is indeed in the form of an advice to a bride.

But I beg to differ from Coolkarni - That song is not so much sugama sangIta IMO.

Here is couple of links to a songs sung by the artist in question - Ratnamala Prakash, R K Srikanthan's daughter:
