On behalf of Sowmya, a warm welcome to all rasikas.org friends for Bangalore Sankar's concert on Saturday, Dec. 1st. Directions for those of you not familiar with Thiruvanmiyur / Valmiki Nagar:
Proceed from Thiruvanmiyur signal on ECR, past the bus depot. The road curves right and after about 300 metres, you will pass the large Marundeeswarar temple on your left. Go past the temple and turn left at the next signal. This is South Mada street and leads you to a fairly large store named 'Singapore Shoppe'. Another landmark is the Mangani Vinayakar temple at this junction. Turn right immediately after the Vinayakar temple (this road is Kottivakkam Kuppam Rd). Take the second left turn. This is III Seaward Rd. Go all the way down III Seaward Rd. Manasarovar is the last building (No. 19) on the left. Fairly large apartment complex in a creamish yellow colour. Park on III Seaward Rd itself. The concert venue will be the covered car-park in the ground floor of Block A.
Looking fwd to seeing all of you and to place a face against many of the login id's!!!
Ramanathan.

I like Bangalore Shankar's singing very much ( especially Nattakurinji, Dhanyasi, viruttham singing) and I am sure this will be an excellent concert.
9 years back we rented an apartment for four months just a block away from where this concert is going to be held. It is a great neighborhood with an excellent ocean view. The directions to this place bring back fond memories of Valmiki Nagar. There are quie a few CM enthusiasts in Valmiki Nagar.
Best wishes for a great concert and a great audience.

Dear K-ji
Welcome back. Your presence here brings back the familiar, well-meaning, friendly and appreciative mode of camaraderie that was originally The hallmark of rasikas.org. I've become really busy these days, but listening to Sringapuradeeshwari Sharade brought back a lot of memories. I wish my best for this concert, and really wish all the folks involved with this initiative (The rasikas.org concerts) a millon years of living and giving. Best wishes, and its such a pity that I cant make it.

Thank You , mahesh and others.
Yes it is a bit like the predicament faced by The old Sanyasi in that classic Hindi Movie "Toofan Aur Diya".
Two orphaned kids take shelter with him in his cave after a disaster at home.
And in due course of time The Stiff -always in Prayer- Sanyasi becomes so engaged in the daily activities of the Children ,
(and the comparison is relevant only from this point onwards)
that he remarks one day " Children, Your love and affection have brought to life again , the joys of daily ATTACHED living.
So I guess , that is the bottomline. The
"familiar, well-meaning, friendly and appreciative mode of camaraderie "
Here is a short delightful clip that I discovered recently.Too beautiful for words.

Rasikas are urged to join in early , so that we make a prompt start.
Since all the artists have to catch trains after the program and we are keen to get a full 3 hour performance.
For those of you who are not aware of that part of Chennai, please add another 30 minutes to enjoy a stroll upto the beach and back.
Again , Welcome to all .Get as many friends and relatives to grace the occasion.

Bharath, I don't think so. All I know is that the building opposite Sowmya's apartment block is an independent house belonging to an AIADMK politician who contested the last assembly elections! Can't recall her name!rbharath wrote:is this building opposite to the building called 'sri kripa' ???ramanathan wrote:This is III Seaward Rd. Go all the way down III Seaward Rd. I'd join cool-ji in requesting all rasikas to join us early, say by 5 or 5.15 pm itself, so that you can savour a small pre-concert treat, chat with the musicians & host and then sit down to enjoy the concert. See you all soon...

'sri kripa' is on 3rd seaward road only. on the right side of the road, after u cross the balakrishnan street cross section while going towards the beach. however, it is only later did i realise that asking that made no difference...ramanathan wrote:Bharath, I don't think so. Perhaps it is a bit late to be discovering this thread!
But have been 'out of station' for the last two days, discovering Hyderabad. I expect it'll be pleased to know it has now been discovered!
Well, you can tell from the foolish banter that the program which I easily found with the aid of an email, a phone call, a map book, a couple of wrong turnings and a passer-by, has left me in a splendidly good state of mind and feeling!
What else can I say? Best to leave the rest to the experts. But, anyway... the singing was powerful and splendid; the violin was sensitive and musical (she seemed quite pleased that I compared her style to my London Ex-Bangalore friend, Balu Raghuraman; I'm sure he'd be pleased to know that), and the mridangam... Full of joy! All the sensitivity of good accompaniment was there, but also with a powerful dose of spirit.
Cool and friends have done a wonderful job this year of giving birth to this loosely-knot organisation of music, and he tells me that he will be continuing, to ensure that, next year, we continue to have a happy new year

Was only able to get there during the kAmbhOji and tani. Excellent concert: made me want to catch more of Sri Shankar, preferably with the same combination of accompanists. Easwaran sir's mRdangam defined mellifluousness. It was good to catch up with fellow rasikas, and experience the warmth and hospitality of the hosts. Thanks all!

Great startups began their operations in a garage. We have ended the first year in the car park! With Cool at the helm and Rajesh's enthusiasm, I'm sure the momentum will build the next year. Thanks to Sowmya and Ramanathan for being such wonderful hosts. The ribbon pagoda and palgova were great. An awesome speech by Neyveli Sir at the tailend of the concert - one of the best that I've heard. It was also great to find out that some of us had graduated (or in the process of graduating) from the same institutes. Vijay and I realised that we were lazing around in the same campus for a period of one year.nick H wrote:Cool and friends have done a wonderful job this year of giving birth to this loosely-knot organisation of music, and he tells me that he will be continuing, to ensure that, next year, we continue to have a happy new year

Words fail to describe the Care and Love bestowed by the Hosts Sowmya and Ramanathan(I have no idea of the expenses for lavish fare, though !).
The fact that they along with the likes of Neyveli Santhangopalan decided to support us in our endeavours speaks volumes for their commitment towards Pure Musical Experiences.
We have had 11 concerts in 2007 , and each time the appointed day drew near , my biggest source of excitement was the thought of meeting our rasikaorgite friends again.
And the thought of connecting ourselves to overseas rasikas through these uploads, in spirit.(Though with a time lag).
As our lives get busier and busier (I am myself going through a process of major changes in my career) We stand committed to have these bashes atleast 8-10 times in a year.
More On Sankars Concert later.Still too "Drunk" with his Music to make an objective assessment.

From WikipediaThis article is about ancient Greek gathering...
An orgy (όργιον) was a secret cultic congregation at nighttime in Ancient Greek religion, overseen by an orgiophant
Etymology
Greek όργιον is cognate with έργον "work, effect, [religious] service" (ultimately cognate to English work itself). The term was loaned into English in the 16th century, via the Latinized orgia.
Since the 17th century, due to its connection with Dionysus and the Bacchanalia, the English term orgy could refer to "any licentious revelry",
......
Nick.
I have quoted what little I could find about this subject.
And needless to add ,I have absolutely no desire to take on the role of the Orgiophant-whatever that may mean.

Living overseas seems to be such a curse - especially during December season.
If these concerts are not copyright protected, can we get to listen to them thru MP3 files. Also, can some one post the gist, if not the entire speech of Shri Neyveli.
Also a possible dumb question. Is Smt. Sowmya the singer who hosted this event?

It was probably the best of the series. A great team. Sri.Easwarn was so involved he was singing O Rangasayee along with Sri Shankar.
I planned my work to be at the venue by 5 pm but ended up driving across the city twice and missed the initial interaction with the artists and friends.
What a way to end the year and definitely a motivator to continue the venture next year.

None of our Concerts are copyrighted. In some cases if videos do not appear here , it is because of the Artists wishes.
K Gayathris Concert - Both the Video and a mp3 version which is clearer than isairasigan's upload will make their appearance here.
Prasanna Venkatraman's Concert- We have only the video-That too will come up in due course of time.
Manakkal Rangarajans concert and Srirangam Krishnamachari's Concert Videos will see some more delay because of the need to convert from DVD format.
Except For Sankara Iyers concert , all the rest have been covered .Latecomers to this forum can feel free to make requests here and hopefully we will find some volunteers for reuploads.
Chennai based rasikas are free to walk into my home and get these transferred .
All the artists featured by us till date have been very appreciatiive of our goals and attitude
Here is the first 45 minutes of Sankar's concert.
Progress will be slow .Uploads will be on rapidshare.but members need not panick or rush.I have used a Premium account and so the links will stay until I delete.Though cumbersome, kindly bear with us.
I hope to finish all backlog during the season (so that overseas rasikas have something to enjoy and not feel the pinch of being away from Chennai) and then write a concluding post on the objectives with which we started the series and the gains we have achieved.
To make 2008 a more exciting experience.

Shri Bangalore shankar is a disciple of Smt vallabham kalyAnasundaram who is the sister of noted vaggeyakkara mayuram vishwanAtha Sastri(jayati jayati bharatha mAtha fame) .Smt vallabham is also a disciple of the torrential downpour manOdharma artist maharAjapuram VishwanAtha Iyer.
Certainly the manOdharmam was there through out.The start of kedaragowlai was just good perhaps the more questioning bhAvam of kedaragowlai was missing. Shri Mdr's compostion was quite good with a nice alApanai, the swaras were bit measured no usual breakneck hamsadhwani perhaps it goes well being a mdr composition.
Shankar being an open throated singer , the AAbheri suited very well , i liked his rendition of MV's aabhEri a lot . Simm madhyamam alAPanai was quite good , and MV's krithi was rendered very well with a very good neraval in "pannegendra sayana", again his openthroated style suited him well.
nAttaikurinji was quite an interesting choice as I was expecting to watch closely how he handles the subtle nuances of nAttaikurinji , to me he was just good.A very good alApanai of SAveri and this krithi with alApanai was the best before the tukkadAs. His ranjani was sung very well , kAmbOdhi alApanai had some very good manOdharmam , he trying to reach the trough of kAmbOdhi was quite nice to hear . O rangasAyi perhaps one of the most expansive kAmbOdhi was sung just good to very good , perhaps the neraval was not very fulfilling (could have gone more).
The best of best is all the tukkadAs that he sang after main. The suddha sArang was very good .The slOkham suddham braham vichAra was very good in dhanyAsi and revati. I found it difficult to connect behAg and I particularly liked kalyAni(was there a touch of yamunA kalyAni ??).
The best of best tukkadA was his durgA very emotive and delivered outstanding .mOhanam was just little behind durgA again delivered excellently. After a brief speech by neyveli, Shankar's expressive voice fitted well with nAdanAmakriya, the last sindhubhairavi was very good , but it was bit semi-classical.
The violinist played like a shadow , the mridangist was excellent he is one great mridangist who was aggressive yet not obtrusive to ears.
Nice to see Coolji after a few concert miss, he in a white kurta jibbA , I thought may be there would be a last minute HM-CM fusion by hubli cool- bangalore shankar. That was quite compensated by sowmya-ramanAthan and the entire manasArovar sabha.
. Perhaps vid sowmya proved it only needs a great parking garAge to create great concert.

Thanks Rajesh. This is indeed 'Karnatic' Music presenting the best from Karnataka! No MD or SS. I am pleased to find a JC ! I may have to seek the help of Lakshman to get some of the lyrics but will wait till you post the audio. I also expected a token HM but am not really disappointed! Will wait patiently for the Review by vijay/Ram and the u/l of audio and video subsequently. This is indeed a fitting conclusion for an eventful year and all of us abroad are grateful to coolkarni for the initiative ,organization and the dedication with the excellent cooperation from you folks.
Greetings to one and all of you and to your hospitable hosts!

Not quite sure what Rajesh exactly has in mind but it was certainly a great end to the series. The vidwan has a clear, ringing voice and as has been noted by many others, Easwaran sir was a revelation. Chennaites do not hear much of Charumathi Ramanujam except during the season - which is their loss since she is one of the best violinists around. Aided by these virtuosos, Sri Shankar presented a very balanced and consistently engaging concert giving us just the right doses of alaapanas, neravals and swaras. My pick was the rendition of O Rangasayee.
Somwya's hospitality was generous and very gracious - she had taken the trouble to prepare dinner for the rasikas and personally invited all of us over. Many thanks to her and Ramanathan for putting this event together.
In the first concert of the series, I discovered a neighbour and in the last a junior from a distant campus! So the rasikas series is as much a networking event as a musical one!

mohanmohan wrote:rajeshnat thanks for the details of the concert. Your use of adjectives like of 'best of best', very good, quite good, good maybe easier understood if you provided a mapping of these terms to A+, A, A-, B+ etc!
Usually my descending order of rating is oustanding, excellent, verygood ,good, just ok(average) , below average, poor. Always finding it difficult to round up most of the time.It is quite tricky to map the terms like a A+,A ,A-,B+ etc, I instead prefer a score of 1 to 10 like what bala747 used to do for reviews.

Can some of the Techies here confirm that this can be a nice technology for us to employ -so that you all can experience Our Concerts as they happen?
At Rs 4000 , this looks quite affordable ...

Sir,
I have several friends that employ slingbox. The only problem is that for copyright reasons, only one person can access the stream from a slingbox at one time. People can stream to any number of computers, but its only one at a time. Sony has another product, called LocationFree Player which also has this restriction. The issue is that these programs are designed for TV (but also can be adapted for our purposes via a video recorder), so they have to have copyright protections associated with the software.
Since we only need to show video streaming, and not TV content, hopefully we could find some other alternative. Anyone else know of any possiblities?

A short sketch of the violinist.
CHARULATHA RAMANUJAM
Belonging to a family deeply interested in classical music – father is a graded AIR vocalist – Charulatha enjoys a pedigree that includes some outstanding gurus – Vidwan Pudukkottai Ramanathan, Late Sri Anoor S Ramakrishna and Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri R K Srikantan.
Charulatha is a promising young violinist - an accomplished and sought after accompanist. She is known for her supportive and unobtrusive playing. She enjoys the role of accompanist as a good learning experience. Though she has been performing as a soloist on occasions, her first preference has been to play the role of an ideal accompanist.
Charulatha has, to her credit, a number of titles and prizes. To name a few, she is a recipient of Ambujam Krishna Award. She was judged the Best Accompanist in the junior category of concerts of Bangalore Gayana Samaja. She has received the ‘Ananya Yuva Puraskara’ of ‘ANANYA’, Bangalore.
A Graded violinist of All India Radio, Charulatha has been featured in South Zone Hook Up Programme and National Programme of Music of AIR and also National Programme of Music on Doordarshan.
Charulatha has been performing at major sabhas in Chennai, Bangalore and other places in India. She has toured Malaysia as a Soloist as well as an accompanist. Also she has toured Australia, USA and Europe as an accompanist.

Hope to see pics of the event.
I enjoyed the concert very much-excellent with many new kritis..(at least I haven't heard those)
The violin accompaniment for just superb. It appeared as if the singer himself was playing..great coordination as well as solo parts.
I specially liked the mridangam for AbhEri kriti. It was singing...
