Charulata Mani - Bhavan Concert
2nd december

one of her isai paiyanam programmes, the concert featured chakaravakam and shanmughapriya. the carnatic and cine treatment of the ragas were outlined very deftly and in an entertaining manner, with the housefull (and more) crowd involving themselves entusiastically.

it is probably the only concert in recent times when i've seen the audience taking in an alapana in complete pindrop silence. the shanmugapriya alapana was outstanding epxecially in the higher reaches, with people around me raising their arms as though in epiphany. marivere kriti followed.

chakravakam was dealt with in less time, but very satisfyingly with vignavinayaka something something as the kriti.

had to queue up for halfhour outside the entrance but well worth it!

could some kind soul upload or share the jaya tv november episodes of isaipaiyanam? i believe there were some new ones and i missed all of them not being here. as these are not commercial and already some episodes on youtube, i trust the embargo does not apply :-)

There is always a debate whether Isai Payanangal is for core CM lovers !!. Somehow, Charulatha made it success. A mix of Ragas, Cinema songs and a Raga alapana followed by a Kriti is, for me, not a fit CM concert. I strongly feel Cinema songs should not come in between a good Concert, that to, during December season.

I also attended this as well as last Isai payanagal in the same BVB. Last time, she took Amritavarshini and Sindubharavi.

The irony is, when she was singing "Autokkaran Autokkaran" (of Sindubhairavi) from a Tami movie, music composed by Deva, one 60+ got up and shouted "gumukku inna gumukkuthan, achakku enna achakkuthan". (It is the part of song, sung in chorus, in the movie).

One guy got up and asked, why Tiruppugazh was not taken in the Raaga, without even knowing Tiruppugaz, except Sri.Raghavan's team, is sung in different Raagas.

I don't understand why Charulatha is coming with full of jewels ?

the autokaran incident was funny. some of our senior citizens are indeed very up-to-date! i dont think there is much to debate, the concerts seem clearly targetted at the lay audience but are nevertheless revelatory. i would not even call them carnatic concerts and i dont think the organisers are billing them as such either. the singing and talking are so seamlessly done that it is closer to harikatha than lecdem. for someone who has little exposure to film music, i still find it very enjoyable. some of these music directors were indeed inspired. the MKT number in sindhubairavi is still haunting me
