Why do I listen to music? This is a question I've asked myself many a time. Is it for the simple beauty of a heart-fluttering melody? Is it for the intellectual rigour of a complex pallavi? Is it to distract myself from the sometimes mundane, sometimes disturbing realities of an increasingly complex world?
Some part of the answer lies in each of these questions. However, the more I've thought about it, I zero in on one thing – I listen to music because of its capacity to bring transcendental moments to my life; these moments, sometimes just fleeting seconds, are precious fuel to keep me going even in the toughest times. Smt. Vedavalli's concert today was such a gem, one which, I have no doubt, will keep twinkling in my musical memory as long as I live.
A piece-by-piece review of this concert is pointless – it was not a presentation of individual items. It was a cohesive expression of deep, intense and heartfelt musicality, one which was made even more poignant by the inauguration of Naada Inbam's first December season without Sri S.V. Krishnan at the helm of affairs. Smt. Vedavalli and Sri SVK were close family friends. Her singing today, aided by the dignified support of the accompnying artistes, was a reflection of her remembrance of, and clarity toward, the mutual musical values they held dear. While the tODi and sAvEri AlApanAs were reposeful, dignified and classical, the highlight of this concert for me was a sahAnA of oustandingly delicate and mature beauty – a sahAnA that redefined the boundaries of sahAnA, a sahAnA that brought tears to my eyes.
This is the intangible fairy dust that masters like Smt. Vedavalli, Sri Nedunuri and Sri Srikantan gently sprinkle on audiences during their performances, when they remind us that despite age, the distillate of generations of musical experience transcends physical barriers, and takes them [and us] soaring on gossamer wings of sahAnAs, tODis, kAmbOdhis and all the other beautiful rAgAs out there...
All we need to do at these times, is applaud and marvel.

Prashant welcome to Season 07....hope to benefit, as usual, from your absorbing concert narratives. Going by the first one, there is much to look forward to...thanks for sharing - wonferdul...
Look forward to meeting you tomorrow along with a certain purveyor of fairy dust (2 of them if you care to ask Ram who, I understand, was sipping the "distillate" along with you today)

Prashant, A lovely review!
Thanks for sharing the fairy dust generously (I am resisting the ugre to refer to a certain fairy that twitters around Peter Pan!)
All the reviewers (Vijay, Ram, Bharath, you, and all the others) are doing a fabulous job of taking us on your pilgrimage of 'gAnamrutapAnam' - thanks for sharing - hope all of you experience blissful moments a-plenty this season and share your wealth with us!
