kadri gopalnath at NGS on 15.12.07 accompanied by kanyakumari on the violin, haridwaramangalam on the thavil bangalore amrit on kanjira and rajasekar on morsing.
the song list:
1. valaji navaragamalika varnam
2. gajavadhana sriranjani
3. sarasiruha amruthavarshini
4. saranam bhava hansavinodhini
5. entaro sri
6. intha sowkyamani kaapi neral and kalpanaswara in kaapi, vasanthi and neelamani
7. vaishnavajanatho misra kamas
8. oh rama ninnama(?) gujarathi thodi (?)
9. athivo hallathivo Sri
10. Kuraionrumillai ragamalika
11.bagyatha sri

kadri; excellent but should avoid climaxing in higher octaves during alapana and getting cliched applauses.
kanyakumari: kanyakumari doing music penance.
haridwaramangalam: not withstanding hype and thisra and kanda in thani should concentrate more on precision and less on sound.
amrit : OK
rajasekhar : did not live up to expectations, though a fine artist.

Sudha suffered from voice problems but provided enjoyable elaborations of Thodi and Sreeranjani. Voice settled down in the latter part of the concert. Vittal Ramamurhty was very good on violin. Eashwaran and Raman gave very good support and an interesting tani with kuraippu in tishram.

Gayathri Venkataraghavan
Akkarai Subhalakshmi (Violin)
Ganapathyraman (Mrudangam)
Guruprasad (Ghatam)
The Music Academy
16/12/2007

Nera Nammi – Kanada Ata Tala Varnam
Pahimam Sri Rajarajeshwari – Nattai – Adi (Tisra Gathi) – Syama Shastri – S
Ninne Nammithi Naiyya Simhendramadhyamam – Misra Chapu – Patnam Subrahmanya Iyer – RNS
Sree Janaki Tanaye – Kalakanti – Adi – Thyagaraja
Sivakamasundari – Mukhari – Adi – Papanasam Sivan
Evari Mata – Kambhoji – Adi – Thyagaraja (RNST)
Ragam Taanam Pallavi – Ananda Bhairavi – Chatushra Jhampa, Khanda Nadai, Eduppu – 2 matras from samam. Ragamalika swaras in Hamsanadham and Kapi
Tukkadas
Mangalam

A fine debut concert in the Academy prime slot from Gayatri. Her voice was in fine shape and made for appealing renditions of Simhendramadhyamam and Kambhoji. Only flaw in the concert was a missed forvai in Misra Chapu for Simhendramadhyamam. RTP while short was quite comprehensive and competently done in a difficult eduppu.

She had a great team supporting her - Akkarai Subhalakshmi matched the vocalist's melody. Ganapathiraman's tisram took one's breath away and Guruprasad produced nice gumukkis.

Please restrict to one review per topic. That way little inertia prone posts will get added with the right context. Also preferably include titles with atleast name ,sabha and dates easier to index and search later.

Some how I am feeling we all rasikas are not showing that much of enthu as last year in posting reviews. I am also not attending that many concerts(only 6 so far) , my enthu has also waned because of work.Gently reminding all to post more reviews!!!

Thanks for the corrections Rajesh. You mean one thread per report...since the those above are separate posts...anyway, will keep in mind. MOderators may use their discretion to split the above into separate threads...

I too agree that we are not getting enough reports...Ram's retirement has been a big blow. I hope other rasikas will share whatever they can. Please remember the idea is more to get a flavour of what's happening - therefore perceived lack of knowledge should not be a constraint. It would be great is we can get at least a songlist for concerts attended.

I would suggest two more things.

1) Do not abbreviate the sabha names. But if you do abbreviate in the title, provide the full name in the body of the report.

2) If possible, include the name, accompaniments and other details in the body of the report in addition to the title.

Shri Neyveli Santhanagopalan (Vocal)
Shri RK Sriram Kumar (Violin)
Shri Umayalpuram Sivaraman (Mridangam)
Shri Amrit (Kanjira)

Carnatica's SAMARPANAM series, Swamys Hall

Slokam - Yadhukula Kambhoji
Karunimpa - Sahana - Tiruvottiyur Thyagayya (RS)
Sri Mahaganapati - Gowla - Muthuswami Dikshitar (S)
Guruvara Mahimala - Ananda Bhairavi - Walajapet Venkatramana Bhagavatar (S)
Ennadu Nee Krupa - Vachaspati - Patnam Subramania Iyer (ANS)
Sogasuga Mridanga Talamu - Sriranjani - Thyagaraja (ANS)
Saraguna Palimpa - Kedara Goula - Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar (ANST)
(Neraval at "Shata Dhruti Pujita Gajarajuni ...")
Saramaina - Behag - Swathi Tirunal
Kanmaniye Solladi - Kapi - Mazhavai chidambara bhArati
Alapana - Madhyamavati (Mangalam)

Wonderful 2 hour concert by Shri Neyveli, ably supported by brilliant accompanient
from Shri Sriram Kumar -- and need one say anything about Shri UKS? Amrit
on kanjira was excellent as well. The concert began with a brisk Sahana varnam
with neat and innovative swarams, followed by Gowla. A rare composition of Walajapet Venkatramana
Bhagavatar in Ananda Bhairavi proved to be a nice treat. This was followed by
Vachaspati, with a super-speed neraval (by both neyveli sir and sriram kumar)
and incredible accompaniment from UKS. Sriranjani and Kedara Goula were undoubtedly
the highlights of the day, both with immensely fulfilling neravals (as one member of the
audience pointed out, swarams felt somewhat redundant after those neravals). Shri UKS
asked for a repeat of the Kedara Goula neraval before agreeing to play the thani, which
was short and scintillating with nice quick exchanges between Shri UKS and Amrit.
The concert wound up with a nice rendition of the Behag javali. Overall a lovely concert
with all elements balanced in proportion -- as Shri Sashikiran remarked, a wonderful
lesson to learning/upcoming performers on how to give a carnatic concert.

That should be Sree Janaka Tanaye, referring to Sita; Sree Janaki Tanaye would refer to the twins Lava/Kusha. =)
