Dr.Hamsini Nagendhra at Bharathkalachar on 16-12-2007
The concert by Dr. Hamsini Nagendhra was announced after the Thiruppavai discourse by Sri Velukkudi Krishnan and I sauntered in out of curiosity. Mrs. YGP who spoke about her said that she is a visually impaired person but over coming her handicap got a doctor’s degree and is now a reader in Bangalore University, and congratulated her for overcoming her handicap and conquering the field of music also, learning music from Padmabhushan sangithakalanidhi Madurai TNSeshagopalan, which itself spoke volumes about her talents. Hamsini also has a melodious voice of good reach.
Hearing her, I thought that the thodi she sang is enough to proclaim who her guru is. She started with saranga varnam followed by the dhikshithar krthi, mahaganapathim in nattai. The svram was quite good and the next was ‘the thyagarajakrthi ‘vandanamu,; in sahana. Both the nattai and sahana pieces were rendered well and the next was ,jnanamusakaraadhaa in poorvikalyani. The raga was rendered beautifully and he svaraprasthara at ‘paripoonanishkalanka,’ reminded of the bani of sri Seshagopalan and was well executed.
After ‘ranganayajkam,’ in nayaki,, Hamsini sang saravanabhava, in pasupathipriya , by Muthiah bhagavathar. If anyone had any doubt about who her guru was it became evident by now as all are the specialities of Sri Seshagopalan. Next was the stamp of the TNS school , the thodi raga. Hamsini sang thodi extremely well, doing proud to her guru as well as to herself. The krthi was, ‘ninne namminaanu,’ and the svaraprasthara was at ’kanchadhalayathaakshi, .’and was as good as the raga alapana.
Hamsini ended the concert with the thillana in Niroshta by Sri Seshagopalan and a sloka ambamohini devatha tribhuvani in ragamalika.
The achievements of Hamsini in the field of education and in music, are quite commendable and she deserves to be noticed by the sabhas considering her attitude of taking life as a challenge, undaunted by physical disability and making her mark in music owing not a little to her good fortune in acquiring such an illustrious guru.

What an insensitive comment from harimau.
The word thodi suggests nothting but the movie of that name to him I suppose. I mentioned that thodi is the stamp of the school of TNS from which it is obvious that I meant the raga. This comment shows only the carping tendency of one who is intent only on writing ill of others especially TNS for reason known only to himself. Otherwise he would not have made such irrelevant comment about him on the context of the concert of Hamsini Nagendra.Harimau has digreessed from the topic and posted an insulting comment about TNS.
By the way I want to include few words about the accompanists,R Satishkumar on violin,N.Mohanaraman on mridhangam , BSpurushottham on kanjira and B.Ravi on ghatam. The accompanists were extremely good and well known in the music circles and the violin enhanced the n music and the percussionists provided a beautiful ensemble on the whole.

I agree cent percent with ganalola. To write such a comment totally irrelevant about TNS with reference to the review of Hamsini Nagendra is nothing but malice.TNS should be commended for training a visually impaired student to such an extent that she represents his bani perfectly and it shows his greatness. As Hamsini herself says it is all due to the merits of her guru that she has progressed so well.Missing all that and to comment on a movie is senseless and ganalola is right in saying that it is a pity that the word thodiraga instead of presenting the picture of the grandeur of
the music of TNS, reminded him only of the film of that name.

I shall make amends by going to the concert of your God this evening at Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha.
I would be even prepared to wear sri churnam on my forehead if that would mean that my amends are considered sincere This would be comparatively easy since I have a vertical crease in the center of my forehead from a bunch of people applying the figurative naamam to me. However I draw the line at chamma charanam (or whatever you Iyengars call it); I am referring to the idea of branding both arms.
Your daasaadi daasan,
Harimau
