Accompanied by shertalai sivakumar - violin and A S RanganAthan - mridangam

I only listened the second half of the concert from 2 to 4pm at NGS. I am assuming my first was the 5th one .

5. vara nArada - vijayashri - T
6. yArO ivar yArO - bhairavi - ArunAchala kavi
7. muralidhara gOpAlA - mAnd - Periasami thooran
8A. slOkham "shree parvathi pathi ramAvathi" - hamsAnandi -?
8B. thiruvuLLam irangAdA - hamsAnandi - K ramarAj

Just heard the last half of vara nAradA , the rAga was vijayashri quite an impossible task for me to differentiate with varAli . bhairavi rAga alAPana was very detailed and was excellent . The krithi yAro ivar yarO was delivered very well , smt rAji was trying to build up a nice neraval in "chandra bimbam ", but perhaps just decided after a line to go to swaras directly. Bit of a dissapointment of not hearing the neraval for this great bhairavi no , the swaras were just good to very good, perhaps more felt as she delivered a great bhairavi alApanai.

MLV's touch was omnipresent in muralidhara gOpalA in mAnd , but one no that was simply outstanding was the last slOkham and a brilliant rendition of rAmarAj's krithi. Whom should I praise more for the last no, should it be Smt rAji who delivered so emotively with some excellent alankAram's in some lines like "kaliyuga varadA ,iravum pagalum" or is it Shri rAmaraj who brilliantly crafted this krithi with a line harihara hamsAnanda swaroopa?. Perhaps I can only resolve the tie by stating the winner is neither it is just the rAga swaroopam of hamsAnandi :) what a soul stirring rAga that just brings instant appeal to all rasikas.

Both the accompanies were average. I think I spotted arasi, ramarAj at a distance but could not speak to them as I was in the other side of the sabha and also the authorities were insisting rasikas to leave the hall as the next concert was a ticketed one.

Rajesh,
I was there at SRJ's lecdem and he felt it is the lyrics that gives the emotion and not the raga. The raga itself is capable of bringing out more than one kind of emotion but it is the sahitya that actually plays a role in determining the actual effect. He gave the example of liquids taking the shape of the container it is in. I assume he meant that the raga takes the effect of the sahitya it is used for. As evidence for this argument, he cites how Thyaraja has used Mukhari for many different emotions and not just for the "weeping" effect that we commonly associate it with.

As usual, these are my interpretations of the lecdem. I will have to spend years to understand the depth of SRJ's wisdom.

Nice to know about the rendering of the beautiful kriti in hamsanandi. I trust Ramraj will be able to share the audio with us.

That lecdem makes sense. Prof SRJ has an intuitive knowledge of CM. His views are avant-garde. Wonder whether the lecdems will be available to buy somewhere.
