The concert started late after Trichur Bros wound up. The airconditioning was on high, making the performers shiver. The violin wasn't that great. Still, Suryaprakash gave a spirited performance. Melakkavery's mrudangam was just right for Suryaprakash. They have toured together in the US and Canada. I have heard them together in Cleveland and in Chennai.

Nice varied fare all well served.Good ensemble. kApi was top kapi. As a main item, it sparkled. Suryaprakash's energetic and emotive surge of rAgam, neraval and svarams merged with the fine yet lively kApi of Sundaresan.Not surprising, coming from the school that he hails from. A heaping helping of rAgaS in a ragamalikA is not my cup of tea (sorry for switching the beverage!). Yet, at the end of it all came my surprise. Suryaprakash sang my song inRu varuvAnO?! I was very happy, of course!
Bhaktavatsalam's soft playing of the mrudangam was like gentle rain. The Tani was very good, so was Kannan's morsing playing.
It was an enjoyable concert, and it was evident when I looked around at the audience. Papa Anantaraman sat through the concert. At the end when I said to him, 'Sundaresan played so well', he responded, 'avan maTTum enna? (how about him?), pointing to Suryaprakash! Compliments from a veteran...

Arasi, it must've been very nice to hear your own composition rendered! A while ago, there was a discussion on whether the artistes of today interpret compositions as the Trinity would've wanted them to. Do you think your compositions are being rendered to your satisfaction? Do you have any expectations of how they should be rendered? It would be great to have sri Ramaraj's views as well.

I rushed to NGS to hear Raji Gopalakrishnan render Ramaraj's song (wish I could have made it earlier, but had to keep a lunch date with an old friend). She sang it beautifully. Ramaraj can elaborate on it.
This season, four of my songs were sung. Two by Sumitra Nitin at NGS and at the Academy. She sang the kannaDa kriti nAtyamADO naTarAja in pUrvi kalyAni and vEngaDavA, a tamizh song in SAmA impeccably, with a viruttam. She is the one who has sung my songs on the Arasi CD. Besides Suryaprakash, Jayalakshmi Santhanam sang one in Bharat Kalachar, a tamizh kriti in kAnaDA rAgam. Funnily enough, I had forgotten about its existence. She told me that when she was in America a dozen years ago, I had sung several songs and she had recorded them. Strangely enough, the song starts with the same words as the SAmA kriti, though the content has a different tone: vEngadavA unai vENDiya pinnum ulagOr tIngu ninaippadum EnO--Sol!
As for us contemporary composers, we don't have to 'turn in our graves' like the poor ancients, but have to bear with padac cEdam and with folks singing without much feeling for the words. It is expected. At least, we can correct them! Suryaprakash said that seeing me in the audience made him spontaneously sing inRu varuvAnO? and so he made a couple of mistakes. No big deal. He is a man who values the words in a song and his lively rendering makes a composer happy, if anything...
