Dear Shri Lakshman,
Thanks for the prompt help. I shall save those lyrics. Find someone who can help me in singing the composition. If you are awre of any audio pl. let me know.
I never knew She is the Goddess invoked at Mylapore. As a matter of coincidence I could hum this song at Woodlands Mylapore for my Daughter's wedding. Hence I decided I will find out the lyrics and learn. Thanks. Regards. kanaka

Thanks Ravi for the link. I have not listened to this song in a long while and it is good to listen to it again. TMS's CM cred comes through to some extent. The voice sounds like it is from his younger days(?).
I have not heard anyone else sing this song either. I think, in limited dosage, this can be a good Post-main song in a concert.

ITis such a beautiful song captivating as well as moving staunch devotees to tears, whenever they hear the song.,made very famous BY TMS,for nearly half a century .even if some one else sings the immediate remark will be "you must hear TMS sing it " another point about this song is that whenever any girl is asked to sing either for navarati kolu or "girl seeing", she will immediately sing,KARPAGAVALLI

I think it was one of those 'small' discs - or as GS Mani calls it, a 'private recording'.vasanthakokilam wrote:
In what form was this song originally released? Was it on a 78 RPM disc (both sides)?
Kanaka:
You are welcome - 'yAm peRRa inbam' etc etc...
Like Balu said, this song is indelibly etched in my mind with the wedding experience - in those days of nalangu in weddings, I used to hear this frequently. And since nalangu went the way of the dodo, I have not heard this since, except via TMS' recording.
Here are some of my thoughts about this song as I have heard it over the years:
1. The lines in the AP can be sung as 'Sirpam nirainda uyar SingAra kOvil konDa' - implying that she (karpak(g)AmbAL) resides in a temple filled with sculptures.....It can also be sung as: 'Sirpam niraindu uyar SingAra kOvil konDa' - suggesting that the spirit of karpak(g)AmbAL fills up/pervades the sculptures in the beautiful temple of mylApUr. Either way, the imagery is lovely.
2. The rAga mudra fits in beautifully in most of the caraNas excepts for the last one, where it feels a bit 'stuck on' - could very well have been 'bhairavIyE rakSippAi'.
3. yAzhpAnam vIramaNI, the composer, isn't he the same as Jaffna Viramani Iyer?

There is a lot prAsa used in the context behind the choice of ranjani :anjana vs konjik vs. tanjamena vs. ranjani. This is of course true for all charanams. Evidence of poetic/creative in all current choices. I always love his poetic skills particularly w.r.t raga mudra weaving.rshankar wrote:2. I agree the prasa is very important in the composition for a smooth musical effect. However as shankar points out it should not be jarring to weave in raga names. In C3 I would rather he wrote 'bAgEsvari' rather than 'bAgEsri' to maintain the praasam than try to squeeze in correct raga name. Also in the final charaNam 'ranjaniyE rakSippAi ' is indeed jarring due to the hard consonant 'kSha'; instead 'aruLvAi' sung with a roll on 'ra' would be more pleasing IMHO!

cml - IMHO last line rakshippAi doesnt participate in prasa as much as ranjani and also kenjugirEn for prAsa between first and second halves (although ra and ra is there). Besides shankar's point was about ranjani and not rakshippAi. Jarring? I guess it is subjective and to me it would depend on how it is stretched when sung (i dont remember how it is done here). But I agree aruLvAi would run smoother.
