Sanjay gave a memorable concert on Dec 22 at the Balamandir German Hall.

Violin - M.A Sundaresan
Mridangam - Neyveli Venkatesh
Ghatam - Coimbatore Mohanram

The items presented were:

1. Varnam - Reethigowla

2. Kamakshi - Bilahari - Dikshitar (S)

3. Chandiran Oliyil Avalai Kanden - Malayamaarutham - Subramania Bharathiar (R, N, S)

4. Sri Balasubramanyam - Surati - Dikshitar (R)

5. Kaddanu Vaariki - Thodi - Thyagaraja (R, N, S, T)

6. Sri Rama Jaya rama - Yadukula Kambodi - Thyagaraja

7. Unn kadaikannpaarvei - Kamas (mini R)

8. Nijagasana Yadunandane - Sindhu Bhairavi - Jayadeva (R)

9. Engum Ninaindhirakkum - Senjuruti

Mangalam

During the varnam one could sense his voice to be in great form and throughout the concert the ease and enthusiasm was clearly visible. Everytime he tried something innovative and got it right, he seemed excited and did more! It just got better and better till the end! The raga alapanas of Malayamaarutham, Surati, Thodi were pretty much the 'trinity' of the concert and I am quite sure I haven't heard it better in a long time. The Malayamarutham was masterclass. I've heard so many Thodis of Sanjay and each time it sounds very different but this one was exceptionally good. With this kind of variety, I am sure I wouldn't get bored listening to him sing Todi in every concert !!
Sundareshan played really well and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this combination after a long time.
I am quite dissapointed that the Sanjay-Nagaraj-Karaikudi Mani combo is missing this year but it's also good to hear Sanjay sing with new combos!

A wholesome fare. Sanjay in great form that day.
I am very fond of Sundaresan's playing. It was fun sitting next to his wife and listening to the concert. Both their children are shaping up very well, I hear. It is always heartening to know that a paramparA continues...

I also happend to be at this concert. The best i attended this season. Has anyone else sung the "Chandiran Oliyil" in malayamarutham? I haven't heard any SB song rendered with neraval and swarams... it was wonderful. Wish the concert had been recorded (or hope SS sings it again some place else with recording).

Engum Ninaindhirakkum: Is it in Senjuruti or Kuranji (The opening notes of this song sound almost like GNB's Bruhimukunthethi")
