After the din and cacophony of the December Season where one primarily had a choice of females shrieking abhangs at the audience or alpha males trying to duke it out to establish the pecking order, it is nice to hear Carnatic music as it is intended by the gods to be heard.
Smt Vedavalli opened her concert with "Enthara" in Harikambodhi. Neraval and kalpana swarams were offered at "Seshudu Sivuniki". The mood of the concert was established by the choioce of a wonderful raga and a wonderful kriti presented in a serene and sedate manner.
This was followed by a brisk "Sri Sankara Guruvaram" in Nagaswaravali.
Next came "Brovavamma" in Manji. The kriti was presented in a reposeful manner befitting the kriti.
A nice alapana of Begada was followed by the padam "Yarukkagilum Bhayama?" Of course, Smt Vedavalli has no need to be afraid to sing a padam in the middle of the concert!
A soothing alapana of Pantuvarali and the kriti "Raghuvara Nannu Maravatha" were presented next. Neraval and swrams were at "Manasuna Neeke". The tani avarthanam followed.
Next came "Neelothpalambikaya" in Kannadagowlai.
A slokam rendered in Saveri, Sahana, Shanmukhapriya, and Sindhubhairavi was followed by the Tiruppavai "Andru Ivvulagam Alandhai".
A thillana in Vasantha and the traditional mangalam brought the concert to an end.
It was a divine experience. The crowd gathered around Smt Vedavalli to express their appreciation.
Embar Kannan and Arjun Prakash were excellent in their support of Smt Vedavalli.
Thank God for a respite from the usual crowd, both on the artist's side and the rasikas' side.
