It would be a bit unfair to just pick one 'star'. However, TNS' concert at Parthasarathy Swami Sabha was in a class of its own.

Parassala Ponnamal.

1. Doesn't seem to harbor any desire to prove anything to anybody.
2. Sings in peace for Atma-tripti and enjoys it.
3. Maintains perfect shruthi all the time.
4. Innate grandeur and classicism.
5. No intellectualism.
6. Pleasant stage manners.
7. Great future.
8. 83 years old.
9. Shame on Chennai.

Its not 'shame on Chennai' - shame on the Sabha promoters would be more appropriate-nothing much to do with the city as such.

Uday in defence of Chennai, she was given some prestigious slots and at least the one I was part of, had a good turnout. Can't think of too many places which would be so receptive to unheard-of 83 year olds...but perhaps your complaint is about the fact that she was ignored by the city's sabhas in her prime....

Other stars - judging by crowds, the Aruna-Sudha-Nithyashree triumvirate is ruling the roost. Bombay Jayashree is not too far behind. TMK and Sanjay are increasingly becoming hot favourites with the masses too...R&G and Unni are the other front-runners. Malladis are also slowly but surely getting there. Others like Sowmya, Vijay Siva, NSG, TNS, TVS, Hyd Bros, Priya sisters and OST retain their niche audiences, which are sizeable enough, but aren't exactly setting the cash-counters on fire...sure I have missed many more. Among instrumentalists, it seems only Mandolin can command a full-house and even that is no longer always the case...(quite a constrast with HM where instrumentalists reign supreme!)

All this, of course, strictly in terms of ticket sales....

Uday,
It was nice to read your post. Some of the qualities that you have listed are too profound. In any field, striving to reach such ideals would take an eternal effort perhaps.
Don’t know what it takes to get the right bhAvam. What comes by itself is ahambhAvam.

I am sorry for digressing from the topic.

Uday... you probably would not have attended her concerts if she had been in her 20s :-) So may be you should thank chennai for giving you this opportunity!

As my mom knew her as a child she will be elated in the heavens for hearing that PP is picked number one by some of us!

Uday! Your comments (except for the last one :) are spot on! I trust the last one came out of a 'feverish mind'. Get well soon!

(By the by collectively the stars of the season are our dear Rasika members who have shared their collective get together with all of us!)

Oh yes... The star dust of the season has been the rasika's get-togethers and (of the whole year) the concerts.

The stars, by definition, of that being Cool and the other people who helped to organise and facilitate those events.

cool is the chandra (moon); you are the cluster of stars around; and we are the observers/enjoyers from planet earth !
Nick!
You look smashing in that jari vEShTi. You must also wear a jari upper cloth (angavastram) bhagavatar style. And you remind me so much of (Late) John Higgins who is dearly missed by the CM world!

Hah! You should have seen me at the jam session in my silk finery, with wide gold border --- all dressed up for my wife's son's wedding whence I went next :)

But it is my custom to wear Malayalam vestis (I should say Mundu, I think...) as they give great variety in the colours and patterns in the stripe and borders, and to try to always have some match with the kurta. Angavastrum only for special functions!

peanut butter,
Uday's succinct post summed it all up. The last two points are her being the personification of CM, and there is a hint of humor too there...

When you are ready we will endearingly call you 'Nicholas Bhagavathar' !
" ippozhey muRukkanuNDO? " (your wife would explain the meaning; if not, get back to me :)
