Who else will do such things but the maverick incarnate - Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan. Could have put his genius genes to better purposes.

Folk song? film song?

What's supposed to be so great about it?

Not that there's anything wring with some catchy light music from time to time...

It's a film song Nick, from a movie called Gentleman. The clip was ***BAD***.

I was amused by the complete set of percussionists playing with him.

!. whether is it a folk, film or CM why bother? Ultimatey It is music with carnatic base.

2. When CMusicians [ matinee idols ] are conferred with the highest honur of SK no wonder even he gets it .

3. IMHO there is no amusement in this .

There are other YouTube videos of the same program by KV. It looks like a thematic program specifically about film music, old and new.

I agree with Ramakriya. You know what to expect from KV, and the rasikas can make conscious choice. No one needs to be surprised.

He used to gather huge audiences with his style of music, in open pandal type settings. I do not know if he still has that mass popularity.

BTW, what raga is that song 'ottahathai kattikko' based on, if at all any?

Just pondering.. When MLV sang film songs, especially of the type 'Oh sami..' type folk material, what did CM rasikas think about MLV, then and now?

I am also curious why people characterize this song as 'cheap' ;)

Kunnakudi has his own brand of music which appeals to the common folk.....let us take an example of a temple festival in a small village....let us have two concerts, say, ABC, a carnatic singer presenting a carnatic concert and Kunnakudi giving yet another concert, both publicised as carnatic concert. Imagine the crowd for ABC and compare it to that of Kunnakudi...you will know and appreciate who is attracting the common man to the music. Kunnakudi has done that, taken our music to the masses, albeit, in a form traditionalists (?) may disapprove. I think we need to respect this .

what a simple and wonderful explanation . film music is the media to attract common people., most of them know nothing about raaga or taalam, or classicm. they want something pleasant to the ears, kunnakudi is an expert in making all sorts of sounds from the violin... at the same time , he can play the alapana of a gana ragam . like todi or kambhodi ,for nearly an hour , if need be .gobilalitha

perhaps it is how closely krv follows the original vocalist's singing. i have been comparing the version of marudhamalai mamaniye in that same film song concert series with how he played for the original song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_53uUXk ... re=related

i wonder if people find the original more/less/equally cheap in comparision to the newer version.

I am NO FAN of Kunnakkudi. I have been repulsed by his stage antics many times. However, in all fairness, in the absence of the identity of the artist and the song lyrics, most of us would only be wondering about the "folk song" with no such adverse comments ! We are but human and are biased to some extent. I am no exception.

Isn't it ironic that the chap who posted it is nicknamed "Carnaticconnoisseur"? That's like saying someone is a "Budweiser expert"

VK,
In those days, AiyyA sAmi did not elicit any adverse reactions. The press did not cover trivial things like that. The elders too did not protest, may be because: 1.They did not know (what did they know about films? They frowned on our wanting to go to see one!) . They did not listen to film music on the radio. I think, as I did, many youngsters were very keen on hearing cinema songs. The elders chided us for being crazy about them. A very CM oriented contemporary in our family refused to listen to film music on the radio and we used to get a kick out of making her sing some of our favorites (we were humming them all day) and be amused by her chaste CM rendering of a Lata or a Shamshad!

People like Kunnakkudi or KJY are people who say "I can also do this, so I will".

That they are not full-fledged classical music professionals is known and understood. They can and do occasionally produce classical gems. The best way to approach the music of these artists is to take something that you like and leave out the rest.
