dear rabhindra sangeeth lovers , kindly excuse me . all these years , i was thinking RS was montonous like choir music but a letter byA RAMACHARI,in today's mail bag of the hindu(sunday magazine dated 13/1) dispelled my foolish view . quoting ,ramachari .' It is also interestingthat, being aware of the divide between hindustaniandcarnatic music,he took great interest in setting some of his lyrics in carnatic raagas ,More than 40 of his lyricswere set to different carnatic raagas .Just to give an example, his bhajey koruno shoorey was patterned onThyagaraja'sNeedu charanamule in simmendra madhyamam CAN SOMEBODY POST THIS AND OTHER SONGS .GOBILALITHA

Shantiniketan had the copyrights on "Rabindra Sangeet" for a period of 100 years . Thus no one was allowed to change the tunes as originally set to Music , I presume by Tagore himself. That date is now past and RS can now be set to music by different composers.

Can some rasika from Bengal throw some light on this?

The beauty of RS is the simplicity in which the songs have been set to Music. Even a child in Bengal will be able to sing RS beautifully.

There are wonderful songs in RS like "He Nutan" , "Mollika Bane" and many others which may be difficut to "digest" in a different tune other than what was being sung for over a century.

Apparently, Sanjay had rendered some Rabindra Sangeeth songs in a carnatic format in CAlcutta. Is it possible to find out if this has been recorded/avaiilable commercially. I would be greatly interested in purchasing this if available!

I lived for many years in reddamma apartments in virugambakkam, where a neighbour taught rabindra sangeeth.
Like the christian music that used to be broadcast on Viswavani in the 80s, all their music looks alike to me - belonging to one fundamental refrain of a tune.
I cant put my discomfort down to lack of knowledge of lyrics, either
For I have listened to CM for decades with only a slight understanding of the content.
And even where I understood ....
I had been mistaken with a song Rafi sang
That went like this "Uparwale Jane..." believing that he was singing about God.
Only when I saw the movie much much later, I discovered that the hero was singing about the heroine in the upper berth of a Railway carriage !!
:P

Cool,
Ah, impressions and expressions in art! What finally matters is 'experiencing' (anubhavam), I suppose.
In this case, the music sounded like Ravindra sangeet to me, only slightly modified to suit the bharathanatyam mode. Her dancing was pleasing.

Vijay,
I heard that Sanjay sang one song of Tagore (in sAvEri?) in a Calcutta concert. Would be nice if he sings it in a concert elsewhere.
