Several years ago Gayathri Ramachandran (nee Narayanan) moved to Singapore from NY and I know she was teaching Veena there. I am not sure if she is still there, but if she is, I would recommend her as a great teacher. She is a student of the legendary Veenai Balachander and used to teach his style. Very nice person too, I wish I had kept in touch with her over the years :-(

There are some listings at http://vainika.wikispaces.com/Teachers - please drop me ([email protected]) a note if you find out about more teachers.

Actually it depends really on what you want. If you want structured instruction SIFAS is pretty much the only school with a good teaching system, and they get external examiners from India to supervise the more 'advanced' exams. Also, with the smaller groups there is always the possibility that you would be stuck into playing thengaimoodis in weird temples in the middle of nowhere (or as close to nowhere as you can get in Singapore). Also, SIFAS teachers are for the most part from accredited institutions in Chennai or come with some pretty good credentials and their students generally get good exposure.

As far as veena is concerned there was a good teacher in SIFAS this year, but he just left at the end of last year. The replacement apparently is someone really good, but don't know who she is. My mother says she's really good, and she knows a thing or two about music.

vanika,
thats a nice wiki you've got. It would be nice if we can have a veena session demonstrating the nuances of the different schools.

Thanks SBala, am happy to volunteer sometime, and rope in some other vainikas too.
