This was the second time that I heard Pattabhirama Pandit. The first time, at Ananya about four months ago, I was very impressed. But today, somehow, the concert was not very satisfying. I felt it lacked energy and passion. The rendering of Tyagarajayoga and Pakkala Nilabadi was good, and Kharaharapriya neraval [at manasuna dalachi] was ok, but I felt bored with the rest.
The alapanas for Varali and Kharaharapriya were short, and in my opinion, failed to do justice to these ragas. Second speed swaras for Toli nenu and shreepate lasted only 4-5 rounds. The Shankarabharana alapana was elaborate and fairly good, but the neraval and swaras were too calculative for my taste. They were appreciated by many in the audience, but then, I personally don’t like this type… For me, the best part of the concert was the devaranama, which was rendered very well. [Incidentally, the first time I heard this very meaningful song was from the same performer, in the concert at Ananya. Shreepate and Pakkala Nilabadi were also repeats from that concert…]
I liked Violin much better. His alapanas for Kharaharapriya and Shankarabharana were both good. Mridangam was soft and melodious too.
