The concert was the finest one as usual Sanjay made it great. It can be called as a complete janya raga kutcheri as there was no melakartha sung, even for the main item.Sanjay was accompanied by M. A.Sunderesan on the voilin,Srimushnam Raaja Rao on mridangam and K.V.Gopalakrishnan on the Kanjira.
The Begada varnam was really good followed by Bhuvinidaasudane which was too good....then Kedaram aalapana was done so well and the krithi was a true gem.The speed Sarasasamadhaana came later which was very good.Abheri aalpana was pleasing,(The violinist not just played the violin but played with the violin,he was too good). which followed dikshitar's Kaayaro hanesham a beautiful krithi. The next krithi was in Devagandhaari, Swamiki saari evvarana vachchu swararaaga sudha rasa chandrude a krithi on Saint Thyagaraja by Manambuchaavadi Venkata Subbaiyer a very very beautiful krithi which moved the rasikas completely. Can you ever expect Saama was the main peice of the day....it was really very well and specially the swarakalapna was so beautiful.Thaniavarthanam was highlight. None of the audience moved out...the bhajan of Sri Swathi Thirunal ,Bansi waale in Maand was tooooo tooo good. The audience gave a huge round of applause which continued for around five mins non stop....It was a beautiful concertsasnjay subhramanium

While Sanjay frequently sings Aabheri, TMK sings kAmbOjhi frequently. But the kriti in Aabheri is not much heard in concerts.

sarasa sAmadAna bhEda danDa caturA - in this kApinArAyaNI piece the composer sees in rAmA the 4 qualities needed in a warrior - is there a slow rendition of this composition? Or is it ONLY rendered racily? The only slow one I have heard is in a dance version of tyAgarAja rAmAyaNam.

Wow! I've never even heard anybody sing Shaantamuleka in a concert, forget as a main piece!! How I wish I could have heard this...

Sowmya,
It is possible that you may hear it in Bangalore too, though not as a main. Or, one of the other rAgAs that he sang. Who knows?

I remember a Santamu leka he sang in the mid 90-s (95/96 probably) with Mysore Nagaraj and Palghat Raghu sir. Phenomenal stuff from all three.

Sanjay sang Shantamu Lekha main last year at Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, and it was excellent.
Even though Sama is a raga which does not lend itself very easily to elaboration, Sanjay pulled off
a detailed alapana and neraval as only he can: it was really marvellously sung.

This is a wonderful kriti, with great renditions (do not miss!) by Shri SSI and the Alathur Brothers.

Another kApinArAyani number he has been singing is the Tamil composition tillai chidambarame. He sang this in Jaya MU and also MA.

Kayarohanesam is in Karnataka Devagandhari. The difference between Abheri and KD is a subject that has been flogged umpteen times on this forum!

A mixture of SSI (VarNam, Bhuvini and Ananda Natana) and MMI (Sarasa). Did he perform any Neraval in Bhuvini.. I rate this as the crown of Sriranjani.
2) Kayarohanesam- is another class from Dikshitar. It is on Nagapattinam Kshetram-It is called "Shivarajadhani" Kshetram.
( Please mark your diary to visit this place to have darshan of Neelayadakshi and Kayaroganeshwar. You will not be able to come out of this Kshetram. Such a lovely place.)
All the Aabheri songs are class apart- Nagumomu (T), Bhajare (Mysor V), Thedi vandennudan (Tamil kriti-don't know who is the composer). Maharajapuram rendered this once. The famous "kuku enave Kuil". I
We have a differentiation between Karnataka Devagandhari amd Aabheri. But somehow the dif is thin.
3) Main Piece-Sama is surprlsing. True it is very difficult to do "alapanai" more than 4 minutes. TNS only does this before (to my knowledge).
4) Though there is no apparent Main except Abheri. Must be very satisfying concert. Real miss !!!

By the way, yesterday he peformed in NGS, Chennai. Any review !

The Alathoor Brothers used to sing sama alapanai quite often in their concerts followed by the kriti currently under discussion.

Unfortunately, my concert experience is confined strictly to today's generation, i.e, people who are performing now... :(
