Lji,

Some corrections/comments in the caraNam:

puli tAnum - 'the tiger himself' is also OK and so is pulitALum - puli = tiger; tAL = feet - both refer to vyAghrapAda
padinAngula kAlan = padinAngu ulagALan - one who rules (ALan) the 14 (padinAngu) worlds (ulagu)
mati Adavum = mat(d)i ADavum

BTW, I love Suryaprakash's rendition of this lighter piece...not every one sings the first part of the caraNam.

thank you shankarji. i was told that it was by subramanya bharathi - weird isnt it. even i was wondering about when bharathiyar wrote about lord shiva's dance!!!!

now i would the lyrics.... hope someone could help. thanks.

The lord (nAthan) of cidambaram, the resident of the golden (pon) temple/theater (ambala vANan), is the one whose feet (pAdan) perform the Ananda tANDavam (naTamiDum)

As we watch the Lord dance, the inevitable knowledge (jnyAnam) that follows (toDarndu) the music (gAnam tanai) sends us/gives us (tarum) into a blissful (magizhndu) yOgic trance (yOga vAnam tanil – in a yogic space), abounding (tazhaikkum) with exhilarating (pErinba) meditative peace (mOna). [1]

As vyAghrapAda (puli tAnum) and patanjali bow down (paNi) to him, and brahmA (ayyan) and vishNu (mAlum) wield the cymbals (tALam – naTTuvAngam) and play (koTTa) on the maddaLam (a type of drum), holding a deer (mAnum), a battle axe (mazhu-vum), and his Damaru (Damarugamum), and wearing a snake as a garland (aravum), and his divine (tiru) hands (karamum) showing the gesture of granting the wishes of his devotees (varada) as well as reassuring them of his protection, and encouraging them to be fearless (abhayam)[2], the Lord dances on his lotus like feet (caraNAmbujam). And as the consort/husband (maNALan) of the loving (inba) parrot-tongued (tattai-mozhi) sivakAmI, the one who rules (Alan) of the 14 (padinAngu) worlds (ulagu), and is possessed of sAtvik (satva) character (guNan) dances, and his anklets (Silambum) shake (kulunga), he becomes the compassionate (dayALan) essence/meaning (puruLAya) of the phrase 'tat tvam asi'[3], and is the one at whose feet (tALan) true (nija) devotees (anbar) pay obeisance at all times (sadA). And as he dances joyously and expertly to the sorkaTTu that goes (ena) tattari kiTa dhimi jhaNuta jhaNuta dhIm taka tadhingiNa tOm jhaNa jhaNa jhaNa, and as his matted locks (SaDai) that have become one (Ser) with the river (punal) gangA and the moon (madi) move in unison (ADavum), his devotees (bhaktargaL), the great learned sages (munivargaL), and even the gods in the firmament (imaiyOrgaLum) sing (pADavum) praises (pugazh) at this awe inspiring sight.

[1] - A sort of paradox is described here where the inner peace that will be inspired seems at variance with the sounds of the music and dance.
[2] - refers to patAka mudra of nATya SAstra
[3] – tat tvam asi – that you art – is a mahAvAkya – grand pronouncement of vedAntic hindusim. I will leave to the experts to translate/explain what this means. WAY out of my league!
