Smt. Vasumathi Desikan, a senior disciple of Vidwan A Sundaresan sang in the Thyagaraja Aradhana series of the Asthika Samajam, Tioruvanmiyur on 21st Feb 2008.

Commencing with Muddumomu (Suryakantham), she presented an excellent off beat selection of Krithis :- Marubalka (Sriranjani), Nada Sudha Rasa (Arabhi), Chinthisthunnade (Mukhari), Kattu Jesi Naavu (Atana) Kalaharana (SuddhaSaveri), Emi Jesithemi ( Thodi), Laali Lalayya Laali ( Kedaragowla ) and Lali Yugave ( Nilambari).

There was an orderly progression marked by sensitivity in the raga presentations of Arabhi, Atana and Thodi . Eschewing the present day tendency to sing swaras for every krithi, she sang apt kalpana swaras for only three of them viz Muddu momu, Nada Sudha Rasa and Emi Jesithe. Her kirthana renditions reminded one of her Guru.

Sung without ostentation, the concert made a good impact. Sri Narasimhan , during his speech remarked that one was not aware of the time passing by while she was singing and that was the hallmark of good music .

Kum Nandini and Kumbakonam Swaminathan ably supported the music that was presented and revealed their intrinsic appreciation of musical values.

Jagan,
Thank you for the nice review from Chennai. With all our young reviewers being extra busy (I would think), there are only trickles of reviews from the CM city.
Haven't heard of Vasumati Desikan before. Good to know that there are more able musicians than I think there are...

arasi, there are many many able musicians who dont perform on stage, for want of takers. AIR broadcasts are the proof for this.

Indeed, both young and old.
