arasi-ji, here's more:
It was a wonderful concert. Their shruthi shuddham and amplitude modulation was brilliant throughout. For many sangathis, while Ganesh sang in the upper octave, Shashikiran sang in the middle octave - the effect was electric! I heard them sing enta vEDu kondu rAghavA, mAyammA and enna tavam seidanai in concert for the first time. The songs were sung so emotively that Raja Rao sir paused several times to enjoy the music. In enna tavam seidanai, for instance, the gamakams were so beautifully executed that when they sang '...pAlUTTit tAlATTa' and '...vAi pottik kenja vaittAL', it felt like each of those actions was being performed.
The pallavi was a tribute to Hamsadhwani Shri Ramachandran, the lyrics 'sundara...' meant to indicate that he had passed the baton to his son Shri Sundar. The Hamsadhwani alapana was done by Shashikiran, who traversed two and a half octaves, from the shadjam of the lower octave to the panchamam of the upper octave, with ease. The tanam, split between the duo, had percussion accompaniment. It was, needless to say, beautiful! The brothers sang kalpana swarams in hamsadhwani, hamsanAdam and hamsavinOdini - when it was time for the tani, Shri Raja Rao asked them to sing another ragam, so Shashikiran sang hamsAnandi. Before he played the tani, Shri Raja Rao spoke eloquently about the duo's singing, praising them for presenting pristine music. Shri Raja Rao and Shri S.V.Ramani gave excellent support - their instruments played along with the vocalists! Shri MAS played beautifully from start to finish.

Thank you, Nivedita. Sounds like a very interesting concert.
M.A.Sundaresan is among my favorite accompanists. So too SrimushNam (though his preference for loudness the past years bothered me). He was a delight when he accompanied Srikantan along with his ShishyA Sudheendra in Bangalore recently. Now we hear his masterly strokes more because the reduced sound of the microphone brings out the beauty of his playing...

Definitely not. Sheshanna has used the rAja mudre in this composition. Sheshanna was a court musician in the asthana of Krishnaraja Odeyar.nivedita wrote:Thanks, kmrasika, but according to Vid. Shashikiran, it is a composition of Krishna Rajendra Wodeyar.
AFAIK, this is the most famous composition of Veene Sheshanna.
Other composers in Mysore court, such as HMB also have used Krishna Raja Odeyars name in their compositions ( The famed daru varNa in kamach, and tAna varNa Sri rAja mAtangi in Suddha dhanyasi come to my mind in this context)

And in the contect of this song, it would be better sung as makuTakke mangaLa ; Even though mangaLam and mangaLa mean one and the same, based on the context one sounds better than the other.nivedita wrote:10. makuTakE ma.ngaLam – madhyamAvati – Adi – Purandaradasa

ramakriya, thanks. I've confirmed with Vid.Shashikiran that it is, indeed, a composition of Veena Sheshanna. He says that it is one of the compositions that have been wrongly attributed to the Maharaja. I've edited the song list.
meena, the lyrics in the caraNam go thus:
eNNi vidamugA vEDu kondurA
ika tALa jAlanura dayayuncarA
ninnE namminAnurA vinara
suguNa sAndra shri krishNa rAjEndra
If you want the entire tillana, I'll post it.
