Prof. T N Krishnan inaugurated the ‘Kalotsav’ of Sri Ramakrishna Bhajana Sabha [their annual Shivaratri music festival] and presented the inaugural concert. He was playing alone [without his daughter Vijayalakshmi who usually supports him], and the effects of his advanced age were visible. He seemed quite tired at times, and it took a bit off the effect of the 2&1/2 hour concert.

He started with Vaataapi. The cascades of swaras for this kriti, and also for Kamavardhini were spellbinding. Reetigowla aalaapana was well-done, and had a number of unusual sancharas. The best part of the concert was the tanam in ragamalika. Especially, Kaanada and Neelambari were superb. The following tarangam in Neelambari was also played well. He looked like he started Neraval, but passed into second speed swarams after just a couple of avarthams. The swaras were not elaborate either. The tani that followed was good. I liked the ghatam very much. The tukkada section was very nice. All the pieces rendered were bhava-laden.

The turnout for the concert was low. I’ve never seen so less people in Odukattur math. It was barely half-full. Was it the general public apathy towards instrumental concerts? Or were people reluctant to come because of new rules banning parking on this road? The organisers seemed quite concerned about this, and announced 4-5 times that they have made parking arrangements in an adjoining ground. Just thought I’d mention this, because if there are people in this forum staying away because of this problem, they needn’t worry.

As we are on the topic of organisers, let me mention about the Vote-of-Thanks. Instead of the usual tedious, 30 min long, irrelevant speeches of this place, I was pleasantly surprised to find that today’s affair was very brief and to the point. I sincerely hope they maintain this.

Hi sowmya,
Age did have an effect on his playing on saturday : tiredness is one and quality was another. Just that the quality of music and sound from his violin by far outweighs the 'tired' effect. It was a very pleasant performance indeed (Reethi gowla and nilambari were really nice).

And thanks for the update on parking - I was not present when the announcement was made and had spent considerable time in finding a place where pedestrians could be hindered (most other people had already ensured the footpath near the Math premises was full).

Including me!! :D I didn't know about the parking either, and went around the whole place trying to find a parking lot. Failing to find one, I had to resort to the footpath...

Hi Sowmya,

The long (30 min) vote of thanks is by Guruvayurappan samaj trust and Unnati. We still have to go through it during Gokulashtami. The current one is more of a Sivarathri festival programme and by a different organiser and I wait for the grand finale by TMK.

Offcourse Unnati is doing a big service hence we can wait for the speech. I mean as long as it comes after the RTP so that the tempo of teh concert is not reduced.

Regarding the crowd, this place is famous for Nithyasree and Sudha. I wonder what will happen tomorrow during Smt sudha's concert without the LCD projectors outside.

Oh! Are the LCD projectors not there this time? I didn't notice... I'd better be there early for TMK's concert then. I've mostly failed to find seats inside for his concerts here...

Sowmya,
Thanks for the review. We used to attend concerts there until a few years ago. went early and found seats. The traffic situation is so bad in Bangalore and the concert halls are far away from us which makes it worse. It is a pity we have to skip Malleswaram and Odukkattur concerts these days...

Yeah. Odukattur math is actually too far, and I get glares from my mother whenever I plan to attend concerts there :) But some concerts are too tempting to skip - like this TNK one. Chances to hear him are really rare...

The major concert venues in Bangalore are so spread across. If you stay in Marthahalli or Whitefield, it is a tough ask to reach Gayana Samaja or the Frot School Grounds. Similarly, the concerts at Malleswaram ( by Ananya or Mallesewaram Sangeetha Sabha). Odukathur Mutt, may not be far from any part of the city ( 10-12 km max).

In fact, there is a concert of Malladi Brothers , this Sunday at Yelahanka New Town. That is far for south Bangaloreans .

I have a recording of TN Krishnan during his prime with TV Gopalakrishnan mridangam. The main was Shankarabharanam ragam. The alapanai is out of this world and the kalpana swarams is like cold pal payasam on a warm day. The mathuram is athi sundar. TV Gopalakrishnan anticipated every twist and turn to its fullest. What a thopi this man has on his mridangam. The thani avatanam that followed had the arohanam and the avarohanam spelt out by his left hand Ghumukhi.

Bhindi, TNK's Shankarabharanam is always sublime. He has this way of bringing out the variety of flavours in the raga. He can make it sound folky, tranquil... His thara sthayi phrases in the raga are always phenomenal. Listen to: http://www.tnkrishnan-foundation.org/20 ... sudha.html.
