Another concert that I thouroughly enjoyed!
The most extraordinary part of the concert in my opinion, which I have to mention is the rendition of Marubalga. Anyone who repents not having sat in a live SSI concert to witness the magical feel of that song, I am sure got it all last evening! It was a rendition that I thought was very special. Sanjay decided to give it the same treatment as given by SSI and believe me, all the sangathis, the points of emphasis and the overall bhava was the same. Absolutely incredible to hear this krithi rendered like this in such a beautiful temple atmosphere! He took the neraval at the same place as well but only wish he had sung some of those firepower swaras that SSI used to sing!
I am attending a temple concert after a long time and I now realize why people relished such concerts so much those days. A truly traditional and royal experience! The Rathnagireeshwarar temple is a must visit for those who are in Chennai.
Other highlights were the swarams following the Kalyani song. It was truly MMI style, very different and special. Varadarajan reproduced that work in style! Sanjay sang through Keeravani hitting all sthayis and shuffling across the domain quite easily. Even showed signs of some gati bedham!
Nothing much needs to be said about the accompanists as this combo has been a real treat of a formula for a while now.
Incidentally, the maestro TNS joined in during the thani and sat in the first row and enjoyed the concert as well! He was enjoying putting the special metre thalam during the thirupugazh. He did the honors as well at the end of the concert. The maestro of the 20th century garlanding the maestro of the 21st century! Quite exciting to watch, actually!!
During the announcement somebody mentioned that Sanjay was GNB's disciple. I am quite surprised that some people don't even know the real guru of an artiste who's been performing in Chennai for 22 yrs! I need to check the details but I am not even sure if Sanjay was born before GNB passed away! BTW, Sanjay's guru is the late Kolkata Krishnamurthy.

Karthit, Sanjay's gurus, in chronological order have been V. Lakshminarayanan (violin), Rukmini Rajagopalan (his grand aunt), Calcutta Krishnamurthy and latterly, nagaswaram vidwan S.R.D. Vaidyanathan. These are well documented facts. As for GNB, you are right, Sanjay was born three years after the great man passed on, but he has remained a seminal influence on the latter's development. To give the programme announcer the benefit of the doubt, perhaps he meant that Sanjay regarded GNB as a kind of inspirational mentor !

sirsub11, I am sorry about having missed V. Lakshminarayanan (violin), Rukmini Rajagopalan (his grand aunt), and Nagaswaram vidwan S.R.D. Vaidyanathan in that list of Sanjay's gurus. I just mentioned Calcutta Krishnamurthy considering that Sanjay was under his tutelage for the longest time period and based on the assumption that Sri Krishnamurthy played the most significant role in shaping his career.
I surely don't mind the programme announcer being given the benefit of the doubt ! (It's definitely not as lethal as a Lee beamer on Tendulkar !)
Probably in his excitement he may have mentioned GNB, from the inspiration perspective, inspite of knowing the real fact ! My only concern was that it may have misled some of them among the audience who may have not known about Sanjay's gurus !

A virutham on murugan before a song on sivan...hmm!
Aaduginran Kannan is a composition of Suddhananda Bharathi. I'm a little surprised that he sang it in Kapi (according to the songlist) rather than in Mand.
